Why buyers choose this model

The A4 Avant is a very popular Audi model in Europe, which was often used as a service car. European insurance agents, pharmaceutical referents and sales representatives were constantly forced to decide the Luxury dilemma: which of the wagons is best suited for the role of an official - Mercedes C-Klasse, BMW 3 or Audi A4? A lot of interest in premium wagons was shown by motorists looking for a family car. And in the end, many opted for the fourth-generation Audi A4 Avant. The Audi A4 B8 entered the market in December 2007 in the back of a sedan, and March 2008 joined the station wagon Avant. The B8 is built on a new platform shared with the Audi A5 and Passat. The car became more attractive than its predecessor and made a huge technical leap forward. In November 2011, the A4 experienced facelift, during which it received improved equipment.

What buyers check

Design features

If you place the previous generation model B7 next to you and focus on the proportions, you will find that the front overhang has become shorter. This is a response to criticism of management. The power unit increased the load on the front axle too much. It should have been moved back.

Solving this issue was not so easy. In order to move the engine back, the transmission had to be arranged differently. This, in turn, required the creation of new mechanical and automatic transmissions. At the same time, the position of the steering column had to be changed.

Ultimately, where the B7 series had a clutch and a hydraulic transformer, the new B8 had a front axle differential. Weight received a more favorable distribution on the axes of 55:45 (before: back). I don’t think anyone would say that the nose of the car was overloaded.

The 4.70-meter A4 is almost as long as the first A6. But the trunk for such a large car is relatively small – 490-1430 liters.

Engines

The Audi A4 B8 offers a wide range of engines in the power range from 120 hp. TDI to 450 hp RS with a predatory V8. The fleet of service cars, as a rule, got station wagons with a 2.0 TDI with a capacity of 120, 136, 143, 163, 170 and 177 hp. and a mandatory particulate filter. 2-liter turbo diesel works pleasantly restrained, easily accelerates the Avant even at full load and consumes only 6-8 liters of diesel fuel. 2. 0 TDI from the very beginning met the emission standards of Euro 5, used the Common Rail Bosch injection system with electromagnetic nozzles and a particulate filter. Regardless of the engine version, a cartridge with a balancing shaft is installed everywhere. Diesels manufactured before October 2009 inclusive, have an old version of balancing shafts with a hexagonal oil pump drive shaft 77 mm long. Due to the wear of the hexagon, the performance of the oil pump fell. After went more durable shafts enlarged to 100 mm. However, in the case of the Audi A4 B8, cases of wear of the shaft are isolated. A number of 2-liter diesel engines (except for the 150 and 190 hp versions) fell victim to the high-pressure fuel pump. He started to drive the shavings that finished the nozzles. The fuel system required cleaning along with the tank. During 2013, 2-liter turbo diesels gave way to new units of the EA288 series, where the balancing shafts were located in the block. Experts of Auto Bild after a complete disassembly of the engine 2.0 TDI, which passed 100,000 km, found strong deposits - the coar in the upper part of the pistons. But at this stage, the amount of deposits did not affect the serviceability of the engine.

Transmission

Be careful: Multitronic 0AW’s continuously variable automatic transmission is not reliable enough. The CVT fails due to premature wear of the rubbing cone transmission surfaces and chain links. The variator does not like a sharp driving style. At one time, the editorial board of the German automotive magazine Auto Bild conducted resource tests of the A4 2. 0 TDI Avant. The multitronic failed when the meter was just over 62,000 km. It is worth noting that the variator was offered exclusively in front-wheel drive cars. Quattro’s all-wheel drive meant only a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic supplied by ZF (type 6HP-28AF). Since 2009, individual engines have received a 7-speed automatic transmission with dual clutch S-Tronic (DL501-7Q or 0B5). In terms of reliability, the version with the machine is more preferable than with the S-Tronic. On diesel modifications, the two-mass flywheel, the squeeze bearing and the slave disc often wear out relatively quickly. The cost of a new clutch set is about 1000 euros. The Quattro all-wheel drive system is also new here. It is still possible to count on a self-locking differential, but it is asymmetrical - of the T3 type. Under normal conditions, 40% of the thrust is transmitted to the front axle, and 60% - to the rear. This is done to improve obedience when passing corners. The T3 was borrowed from the RS4 B7 sports wagon. The Quattro system has always been Audi’s pride. It works well even in cars with significant mileage.

Other problems and malfunctions

The suspension of the fourth-generation Audi A4 is quite durable. In European conditions, native levers reach up to 200,000 km, and shock absorbers - up to 250,000 km. Aluminum levers are expensive, saving alternative Chinese substitutes.

The brakes are effective and not durable. Besides, they're expensive. A computer is also required to replace the back pads. When inspected, cracked brake hoses are often found.

Another problem with the A4 is the battery’s quick discharge. The software update optimizes the battery charge management process. In the service book, this operation was designated by the code 27C5.

Rear LED lights sometimes lose tightness and gain moisture, which leads to corrosion of contacts and their failure.

When folding the external mirrors may appear unpleasant creaks. Official services eliminate them with the help of special lubrication. The manufacturer solved the problem by installing modernized sliding washers in the folding mechanism of mirrors, starting from the 22nd calendar week of 2010.

The only place with a weak LCP is the cover covering the place of attachment of the front towed eye. After 100,000 km, the varnish from its surface simply “dissolved”.

The high-quality cabin of the A4 looks decent even after 100,000 km.

Sometimes owners have to deal with capricious door locks. The reasons are usually two - either the locking servo motor fails, or the built-in micro-switch fails.

Pre-purchase checklist

Engines

  • 0 TDI from the very beginning met the emission standards of Euro 5, used the Common Rail Bosch injection system with electromagnetic injectors and a particulate filter.
  • Due to the wear of the hexagon, the performance of the oil pump fell.
  • However, in the case of the Audi A4 B8, cases of wear of the shaft are isolated.
  • Problems usually occur after 200-250 thousand.
  • Wear will be indicated by the extraneous noise coming from the engine.
  • Repairs are expensive because they require the engine to be removed.
  • The most common problem concerns the EGR exhaust gas recirculation system.
  • Problems with the OH recycling system are usually observed after 150,000 km.
  • It is worth paying attention to the fact that between the radiators of the air conditioner, engine and inflatable air, a lot of dirt is collected, and the honeycombs are clogged.

Transmission

  • The CVT fails due to premature wear of the rubbing cone transmission surfaces and chain links.
  • In the case of the S-Tronic, it is extremely important to update the oils every 60,000 km.
  • First of all, heavy trailers should be avoided.

Challenges of selling privately

The Audi A4 is one of the most popular used cars. It still looks modern and attractive. Perhaps the most ideal combination is a six-cylinder turbodiesel combined with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic.

  • Design features: If you place the previous generation model B7 next to you and focus on the proportions, you will find that the front overhang has become shorter.
  • Engines: 0 TDI from the start met Euro 5 emission standards, using the Common Rail Bosch injection system with electromagnetic nozzles and a particulate filter.
  • Transmission: The CVT fails due to premature wear of the rubbing cone transmission surfaces and chain links.
  • Other problems and malfunctions: Another problem with the A4 is the fast battery drain.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
