Why buyers choose this model

When BMW introduced the new E36 series in September 1990, the public was shocked no less than during the controversial designs of chief designer Chris Bangle. Everyone is already accustomed to the angular forms of E30 and the humble lines of E34. Initially, buyers were cautious, but soon the model began to be in great demand in the markets of Europe and the United States. Customers preferred the sedan and coupe. Europeans also liked the 3-door version of the Compact, which was a de facto separate model. The platform and most of the technical solutions were borrowed from its predecessor, the BMW 3 E30.

What buyers check

Reputation

The BMW 3 e36 is associated with young and adventurous drivers who love to drive very fast, leading to numerous accidents. From the point of view of the buyer of a used car, this is quite important. Moreover, in fact, a significant number of copies were restored after the accident. The BMW E36 has a rather complex design. Therefore, its restoration is not easy and expensive art.

It is very easy to run into a carelessly "renovated" coupe that will rust, flow and harass the loosely adjacent doors. The only way to significantly increase the chance of buying an unbroken copy is to limit yourself to finding a Touring wagon. But only every tenth E36 was produced in this version of the body. Most of the offers are a sedan and a little less – a coupe. A well-maintained coupe can be twice as expensive as a sedan, especially when it comes to the 318is.

The LED indicator shows how much time is left before maintenance. Red LED – it was an hour to visit the service.

Enemy at the doorstep

Compared to the Audi 80 B4, the three-series e36 is more susceptible to corrosion, but not as much as the 1993 Mercedes C-class. Rust bubbles on the wings, sills, elements of the front and rear of the body are common. Rotting and the floor under the driver, where salt water accumulates under the carpet in winter. Rust also attacks the battery mount (located in the trunk). After a while, the door seals are deformed. This is especially painful for the coupe, which has frameless side windows. Fortunately, all the details, even the smallest ones, can still be purchased in the original. However, a set of factory door seals for the sedan will cost at least 25,000 rubles.

What's that banging about?

The E36 suspension is not designed to overcome bumps. On domestic roads, it is rented out quite quickly, especially since most owners use the cheapest substitutes for repairs. Fortunately, even high-quality analogues cost less than the original. So the front lower lever Lemforder is available for 5 000 rubles, and BMW – for 9 500 rubles.

The number one problem is the backlash in the sleeves of the longitudinal levers at the back. It can quickly enlarge, and then the wheel will behave as if it is not fixed. The cost of the original lever is about 5,400 rubles, analogue - 2,000 rubles.

Before buying, be sure to check (preferably on the lift) the condition of the cushions of the rear axle and flexible connecting shaft (from 9000 rubles). Replacement is a very difficult procedure. In the Compact version, the back differential cushion (from 700 rubles) is almost always broken.

The manual transmission sometimes causes problems with switching, but the box itself rarely breaks. However, with the search for "beu" details of the difficulties will not arise, and if necessary for 10 000 rubles you can buy a box or bridge.

Plastic front seat backs reduce the real legroom of rear passengers.

Engines

As for the engines, the best reviews are collected by all 6-cylinder gasoline units with a volume of 2.5 liters and above, installed in the 323i, 325i and 328i. Fantastic reaction to gas, long service life and beautiful sound – that’s what they love. Of the “row sixes” should be avoided only the one that got 320i. The engine consumes a lot of fuel and pulls poorly. The main disadvantage of the “six-pig” is the high probability of overheating as a result of damage to the radiator, cracking of the expansion tank and malfunction of the water pump. In the latter case, the owners themselves are to blame, reasoning as follows: if the chain of the timing system is almost eternal, then the pump too. Of course, that's a misconception. The cost of a new pump is from 2,400 rubles, the radiator - from 5 000 rubles, and the expansion tank - from 1,300 rubles. Fortunately, the viscosity clutch of the cooling fan is easy to repair, and the diagnosis of its malfunction takes seconds. 4-cylinder units have been upgraded several times. Early versions with a timing system belt (M40/1.6-1.8L series) are not recommended due to the low life of the belt. You should look for copies with the M43, equipped with a chain drive timing system. The best among the 4-cylinder units E36, undoubtedly, is a 16-valve engine with a capacity of 140 hp, marked with the index M44. It was awarded to 318is after 1996. Earlier versions of the 318is with the M42 are plagued by short-lived camshaft glands. In the line of power units were present and three diesels. It is noteworthy that the weakest of them was the most reliable, although it cannot deliver pleasure from driving.

Millions of versions

It is difficult to find two BMW E36s that are identical, as customers were offered dozens of colors and hundreds of options that could be combined as you like. In addition, many owners have tried to remodel their car themselves, adding, for example, an M-pack. In addition, individual modifications have a significant number of minor differences. It's not just about electrics. For example, the 328i is different in body design from the 316i or diesel cars. Depending on the modification and year of production of the BMW e36, various types of incandescent lamps were installed in the front headlights.

On the inside of the trunk lid is a compartment with tools.

Model history

1992 – The coupe version and the special version of the M3.

1996 – a small restyling. You can distinguish only by the turn indicators: they were orange, turned white.

1998 – presentation of the successor and the change of generations of the sedan.

1999 – the end of production of the station wagon, convertible and coupe.

The body rusts faster than in one-year Audi, but slower than in Mercedes. The seats inside are as much as in modern compact cars. Very nice interior finish.

Neither the front nor rear suspension is impressive in reliability. Even with the best parts (for example, Lemforder), you should not expect to be in operation for many years without backlashes and knocks.

The strongest part of this model. Only the 2.5-liter diesel is far behind in reliability. It's a shame all engines are too voracious.

Good availability of spare parts is an undoubted plus model. However, beware of cheap workshops that will spoil something rather than fix it. This is a pretty advanced car already.

Typical problems and malfunctions

  • Corrosion – fortunately, rarely on the power elements of the body.
  • Overheating of the engine due to a cracked expansion tank, failure of the fan clutch and reluctance to periodically change the water pump.
  • A spider's spider knocks out of the transmission.

What to look for?

  • coupe with 4-cylinder engine. 318is - perfectly balanced and very fast;

Avoid what?

  • versions with a 2.5-liter diesel engine, especially with an automatic;
  • archaic engines of 1.6 and 1.8 liters - no joy from driving.

Challenges of selling privately

In Russia, where cars serve for 20-25 years, the BMW E36 is not yet a retro classic, so it can be purchased for some 40-50 thousand rubles. Alas, such offers often come from young drivers who bought the e36 to take their soul away, which often ended in an accident, or the "death" of the car, the maintenance of which they could not afford. Therefore, it is better to pay for the perfect copy than after a short time to replace the floor of the car.

Even premium cars in the mid-90s had hand-held windows.

  • Reputation: It’s very easy to run into a carelessly “refurbished” coupe that will rust, flow and harass loosely adjoining doors.
  • Enemy at the door: Compared to the Audi 80 B4, the three-series e36 is more susceptible to corrosion, but not as much as the 1993 Mercedes C-class.
  • On domestic roads, it is given up quite quickly, especially since most owners use the cheapest substitutes for repairs.
  • Engines: The main disadvantage of the “six-pot” is the high probability of overheating as a result of damage to the radiator, cracking of the expansion tank and malfunction of the water pump.
  • Millions of versions: It is difficult to find two BMW E36s that are identical, as customers were offered dozens of colors and hundreds of options that could be combined as you like.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
