What buyers check

Review

You can buy different cars for $10,000. For example, a completely new one from the cabin, but poorly equipped, with a weak engine and not very good driving qualities. Or you can have a well-equipped, dynamic, but used - say, a luxury Bavarian sedan with an 8-cylinder 367-horsepower gasoline engine and a rich set of options. I hear people say that such things cannot be compared. It’s like apples and bricks, and running a powerful premium sedan is ruinous. Yes, it is possible, but not necessarily. It all depends on what car you buy and what history it has. If you’re interested in a luxury sedan with a big petrol engine, you probably don’t fall into the category of “I want the cheapest one you have!” or “If you take the mats and spare, give me a discount?”

The premium sedan with an 8-cylinder engine is something special. There will be no more such vehicles in the near future. But before you dare to “break the piggy bank”, find out what awaits you. BMW introduced its next “seven” series E65 (E66 – an extended version with the prefix L) in 2001. The design of the body and interior immediately caused a storm of indignation. The invariably conservative model has taken on very bold forms thanks to Chris Bangle. It took too long for everyone to get used to it. Some customers are said to have abandoned BMW in favor of Mercedes and Audi. After restyling in 2005, the limousine began to look much softer, but the characteristic proportions remained. There was not much criticism in terms of comfort and practicality.

Equipment

Interested in sedans of the premium segment expect a luxurious “dowry”, but, as practice shows, this does not always happen. For example, in instances from Europe, sometimes the equipment is so scanty (within the classroom) that there is not even heating the seats. Things like night vision, adaptive chassis or luxury seats with ventilation and massage are non-standard and are found in top-end versions, such as the BMW 760Li. But in the case of luxury used cars, that’s a plus – the less electronics there are, the fewer potential problems there are in the future.

However, automatic climate control, electric seating, cruise control and on-board computer are included in the list of standard equipment of the basic configuration.

The interior design of the BMW 7 takes some time to adapt. The management of various functions is implemented through the first generation iDrive system. It is very annoying with incredibly slow reactions and lack of logic in management.

However, in general, ergonomics are not bad and you can get used to it. The driver's seat has a wide range of different adjustments, allowing you to choose the optimal position behind the wheel.

The scuffs on the side rollers of the chair are not surprising. The upholstery of eco-leather sometimes wore out already to 200,000 km.

Running

The huge sedan is as easy to drive as any other car. Perhaps only embarrassing is the large effort on the steering wheel, unusual for a sedan. You will be surprised by the high speed reactions. This does not mean that the BMW E65 is a sports car. Despite the good balance, the body in sharp turns, in the absence of active stabilizers, strongly tilts, and the rear wheels lose reliable traction with the road, especially in winter conditions. In addition, there is a significant understeering at the entrance, and on the contrary, excessive rotation at the exit, especially if you act a little rough. The BMW 7 is not suitable for dynamic driving. It feels best on high-speed highways with smooth curves of the roadway. Door locks require regular maintenance – lubrication. The eight-cylinder 4.8-liter engine has more than enough power reserve for fast overtaking. At the disposal of the driver 367 hp at 6300 rpm and 490 Nm of torque at 3400 rpm. The N62B48 is connected to the rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The increase in thrust occurs linearly, without diesel throws. The engine sounds stronger from the outside than from the inside. Unlike modern premium cars, this “seven” does not hide the growth of speed. And that's a fact. Let aerodynamic noise do not penetrate into the cabin, but the hum of large wheels with rain tires is clearly heard. Speaking of wheels, it should be recognized that it is better to install tires with a maximum profile. Serial Runflat is more practical to change to the usual - with soft sides.

Engines

One of the most common engines is the 5-liter N62B48. The engine is generally reliable, but likes fresh and high-quality oil. Even if you don’t plan to travel tens of thousands of kilometers a year, but only 8-10 thousand kilometers or less, be sure to change the oil at least once a year. Trouble can only bring the system of changing the phases of gas distribution, but the problems with it will tell the diagnosis and an experienced mechanic. They will also help to deal with the onboard computer and reset all error messages. The engine requires inspection for leakage of oil from under the head of the block and the valve cover. Most often, the N62B44 is seen behind this, installed in the BMW 745i before restyling. In the BMW 750i, this problem is less common after the upgrade. The new engine, unlike the 4.4-liter unit, is equipped with an additional oil radiator, which helps to maintain the lubrication temperature in normal. But it is around it that leaks can occur, especially if it has not been replaced after a small "poke" into the front bumper. A 3-liter gasoline unit of the M54 series has proven itself well. It has an electronic throttle, an aluminum block with cast-iron sleeves and adjustable gas distribution phases on both camshafts. The only serious problem is the sludge-clogged valve of the crankcase ventilation system. For preventive purposes, mechanics recommend updating it every 2-3rd oil change. The successor to the N52 series received far fewer positive reviews. Top gasoline V12 volume of 6 liters and 445 hp has a good reputation.

Transmission

The biggest stumbling block in the BMW 7 is the ZF automatic transmission. It is said that BMW literally burns it. But the real reason is to maintain the box. The manufacturer claims that the working volume of the oil is enough for "lifetime" use. You probably imagine that there will be left after 200,000 km traveled on one oil – solid “scrap metal”. Mechanics recommend changing the lubricant every three years or 60,000 km. For your peace of mind, it is better to carry out this procedure immediately after purchase. This will keep the machine alive for a lot longer, but you have to understand that it is not immortal. Some BMWs had problems with the box before reaching the 100,000km mark. That's a bad omen!

During the BMW 7 test drive, note how the switching down one or two gears takes place. Some boxes do not want to switch to a lower one, while others have a change in speed with tremors. You can even hear a metallic impact, as if someone had driven in from behind you. When switching up, there should also be no rough pushes. However, small twitches when switching down in manual mode are quite acceptable.

In case of repair of the machine will have to part with the amount exceeding 60-80 thousand rubles.

Walking

The BMW 7 is very sensitive to the chassis condition. Therefore, regular balancing of the wheels and geometry adjustments are necessary. Also pay attention to the wear of the brakes, since many before selling about the condition of these elements do not worry. Prices for these components are not sky-high, and any service will cope with the replacement.

The suspension components are simple and durable, but not limitless. More often, you need to update the front suspension. And in cars with 20-inch wheels, the chassis repair is carried out every 20-30 thousand km.

Weight exceeding 2 tons has a negative impact on the steering rack. Its restoration is often required closer to 200,000 km.

Active Dynamic Drive stabilizers are quite expensive. If you get a car without them, you’ll be less worried in the future.

Typical problems and malfunctions

German engineers literally riddled the BMW 7 electronics. All this "house" is monitored by about 100 modules! E65/66 is almost impossible to avoid. Fortunately, they are usually not serious. Problems arise when vital systems cease to function. According to statistics, the share of electricians in the total list of malfunctions is 35%. The most capricious was the iDrive system, which in the first cars (before restyling) often hovered, especially at temperatures below zero. Lights are a nightmare for BMW owners. The system reported a malfunction of parking sensors. There are less problems with the radio and CD changer. Sometimes the cable of the audio system is damaged. When inspecting the car, turn on the radio and change the balance in the settings menu - forward, back, left-right. You will see if all the speakers are playing. Also, sometimes the trunk does not want to open, and the automatic headlight angle adjustment system fails. Attention should be paid to the proper functioning of the electronic parking brake and the central lock. Besides birth defects, electronics are very sensitive to moisture. It happens that due to clogged drains of the hatch water gets into the trunk and disables electrical equipment - the HKL trunk opening module (5000 rubles per used) and the power management module (Power Modul - 25 000 rubles for a new one). Sometimes the air conditioning is also nervous. Sometimes there is simply not enough cold air, in other cases it refuses to redistribute the currents.

It's important!

1. Rely on the purity of history and transparency of service.

2. Check your car with an experienced mechanic.

3. Test the vehicle thoroughly during the trial trip.

4. The automatic transmission should work smoothly, without jerks.

5. Pay attention to the lack of leads, balance of suspension and wheels.

6. Check if the electrical equipment is working properly.

Challenges of selling privately

You don’t have to worry too much about the fate of the BMW 7 if you’ve checked it out. These cars are bought primarily for the soul. Therefore, as a rule, motorists are morally ready for expensive breakdowns and have a small amount of money in reserve - just in case. But the amount has to be weighty. For repairs of the box, you can be asked for $2,000. It is necessary to accept and with a large fuel consumption - 12-14 l / 100 km. Do not think that you can save money on the maintenance of such a car. Most likely, the most you can cope with is the change of oil and filters. Remember, the BMW 7 loves a attentive and generous owner.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
