It was produced in the body hatchback and wagon (Xsara Break). In 1999, on the basis of the model, the Xsara Picasso minivan was launched into the series. The life cycle of the car can be divided into two stages – before and after the modernization. The first version of this model, produced in the period from 1997 to 2000, is easily recognized by narrow headlights and grille, as well as fog lamps trapezoidal shape. The restyling variation is distinguished primarily by smoother lines. The headlights received a rounded shape, and the fold in the center of the hood became more expressive. The car was designed by Italian designer Donato Coco. The hatchback was available in two versions: three and five-door. The station wagon has a traditional five-door scheme. The trunk of the hatchback allows you to load 400 liters of luggage, and the station wagon - 517 liters. The possibilities of the wagon are among the best in the segment. So, the Peugeot 307 could accommodate a little more than 500 liters of luggage, the Astra II – 480 liters, and the Golf Variant – 460 liters. The cabin Citroen Xara is quite spacious. Four adults will be seated in the car without difficulty. However, the comfort level in the back row is slightly worse than that of rivals, due to the low roofline and lack of space in the legs. After restyling in 2000, under the hood of the Citroen Xsara got new 16-valve engines: 1.6 l 109 hp, 1.8 l 110 hp, 2.0 l 132 and 136 hp, as well as the above-mentioned VTS 163 hp. All owners of gasoline modifications unanimously characterize them as reliable.

There are also some problems with diesel versions. Initially, only one diesel with a working volume of 1.9 liters was offered in four versions: naturally aspirated 68 and 70 hp, and with turbocharging - 75 and 90 hp. All these units are quite economical - the average fuel consumption does not exceed 5.5 liters.

After restyling, Xara received French diesel engines of the new generation of the HDi series. The list of proposals included 1.4 HDi 68 hp and 2.0 HDi 90 and 109 hp. They were all equipped with a soot filter.

Characteristic problems and malfunctions

The biggest curse of Citroen Xara is the bizarre electronics. From time to time on the dashboard appear notorious "garlands".
