What buyers check

Review

The second-generation Ford Ka debuted in 2008, a year after the Fiat 500. This fact is not mentioned by chance. The cars are technically almost identical. Ford Ka built on the same platform, received the same suspension, steering, braking system and even engines. In addition, a lot of similarities can be found among the interior details. To do this, it is enough to simply look at the central panel, where the gear lever, glass control buttons and climate control panel are located. But those who do not pay attention to the details, the similarity is unlikely to notice, since the cars are stylistically quite different. The interior of the tiny 362 cm long machine will accommodate four people without any problems. It's surprisingly spacious inside. If the driver is not too tall, an adult passenger will sit behind him. There is so much legroom in the front right that even a tall person doesn’t need to push the chair far back. The only restriction for passengers behind is the height of the cabin (there is practically no space overhead). It is worth adding that the baby Ka is quite safe car - 4 stars according to the results of the crash tests EuroNCAP. The 210-litre trunk is another surprise. Contrary to popular belief, it is quite capacious and able to accommodate large purchases. There is also a spare wheel under the floor. The Ford Ka 2 is very simple. On the front axle are Macpherson struts, and on the rear - torsion beam, well known even by Fiat Panda. From the Fiat 500 migrated electrohydraulic power steering.

Engines

The engine range is very modest - only two units. 1.2-liter capacity of 69 hp and 1.3-liter turbodiesel recoil 75 hp. Both engines are made by Fiat. The gas atmospheric is well known from small Italian models. It is not very dynamic or efficient, but it is quite cheap to operate. 1.3 Duratorq (later TDCi) is nothing more than Multijet. All engines were combined exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Electricity is the only thing that can fail in gasoline engines. Most often we are talking about ignition coils and sensors (positions of the crankshaft and temperature).

The 1.3 Multijet engine sometimes has problems with the EGR and the chain tensioner. To avoid tension problems, stricter control over the oil level is necessary. Too low a level leads to accelerated wear of the chain. There are even cases of her cliff. But the problem only hit irresponsible owners. Before the cliff occurred, the engine for a long time was accompanied by a strong noise. Fuel injectors and turbochargers have a decent service life (by the standards of diesel units). Fortunately, the turbodiesel lacks a two-mass flywheel.

Typical problems and malfunctions

Trouble is extremely rare. The body does not rust, and the equipment does not fail. Except that with age there are problems with the power steering. However, in most cases, repairs require minimal costs.

However, the “resuscitation” of the front suspension will be a little more burdensome. Replacement of ball supports separately from the lever is not provided, unlike Silentblocks. On new levers it is better not to save, since cheap analogues do not differ in durability. The same applies to not too hardy stabilizer racks.

The rear axle is stronger and shock absorbers are cheap. Not burdensome in operation and brakes – the rear drums do not require maintenance for several years.

Operating costs

The cost of maintaining a tiny Ford is within reasonable limits. Parts are quite affordable, and thanks to the relationship with Fiat, you can find quite cheap substitutes.

In the city, the gasoline engine consumes about 7-8 liters per 100 km, and the average consumption is in the range of 6-7 liters. Diesel unit is more economical by 1-2 liters.

Challenges of selling privately

The Ford Ka II is an honest car that can deliver far more than you might expect. It is ideal for the city – small, maneuverable and, above all, simple. It is cheap to buy, maintain and does not require frequent repairs. The only disadvantage is the limited choice in the secondary market.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
