Value my car1Why buyers choose this model
Orthodox fans of cars marked “Made in Japan”, guaranteeing high reliability, with prejudice to the Honda Accord VI, which has British roots – production was established in English Swindon. But time has shown that all fears are in vain. The vast majority of the specimens are still in good condition. But this is no reason to lose vigilance when inspecting. First, in the Accord, as in any used car, you can find flaws. Secondly, putting in order the running sample will be very expensive. A person looking for a sixth-generation Honda Chord must come to terms with the fact that prices for well-groomed cars are quite high, and attempts to “bargain” usually end in a fiasco. Almost any instance sooner or later finds its buyer, who will appreciate the quality of the assembly, good handling and dynamics of gasoline engines.
2What buyers check
Exterior and interior
The Honda Accord 6 was introduced in 1998. From its predecessor, it is distinguished by a more spacious body and an original stylized interior. A characteristic feature is the instrument panel with three pointers in separate cameras.
The quality of the sixth chord is highly valued. Accurate fit of parts and good protection against corrosion set the model apart from competitors. Unscrupulous “sellers” can easily mask the actual mileage. This is facilitated by a magnificent salon. The plastic used here is very resistant to wear, the interior elements are docked perfectly, and the design is much better than in other Japanese competitors of the late nineties. The seats that provide the right support are also worth positive evaluations. True, the upholstery of the seats "drags" quite quickly. At the same time, estimating actual mileage makes the material on the steering wheel more difficult. Even after 200-300 thousand km, it does not peel and is not covered with cracks.
Other versions from Europe and the USA
- 4-door sedan - sold in parallel with the 5-door liftback. Both have identical dimensions, wheelbase and trunk volume.
- A 4-door sedan from the United States. Americans, as usual, received a different chord, more suited to local tastes, "Americans" were equipped exclusively with gasoline engines: 2.3 liters, 2.3 VTEC and 3.0 V6.
- The 2-door coupe was produced only in the United States. Most copies received a 3-liter V6. Some of the cars were sold in some European markets.
Suspension
Like previous generations of the model, Honda Accord 6 has a multi-link suspension on the front and rear axles, which guarantees excellent driving performance and surprisingly well tolerates Russian roads. Despite this, buying a used car with a mileage of more than 150-200 thousand km, you should understand that you still have to replace something. As practice shows, most often, it is a ball top swivel lever - from 800 rubles, or the entire lever - from 3,300 rubles.
The rear suspension, like the front, from time to time requires adjustment of convergence. If you neglect the procedure, then uneven tire wear will soon be found. The weakest element of the second axis is the hub bearings. The node changes in collection and will cost at least 6000 rubles.
Engines
In the range of engines Honda Accord VI the smallest was a gasoline atmospheric capacity of 1.6 liters and a capacity of 116 hp. But versions with such a motor were not in good demand. The most widespread was the 1.8-liter unit with a capacity of 136 liters. with. Thanks to the VTEC system, the engine is quite economical at low revs and very dynamic at high. This was achieved due to the special design of the gas distribution mechanism and the change in the height of the intake valves. The camshaft has two cams for each intake valve. One group provides “sports” characteristics, and the second – the usual. The mechanical control system allows you to "connect" the necessary group depending on the engine speed. The effect is exactly the same as if someone every time after crossing the mark of 5000 rpm changed the ordinary camshaft to a high-performance one. Therefore, it is not surprising that the drivers of the Accords willingly drive the tachometer arrow into the red sector. This inevitably leads to an increase in fuel consumption. If in normal conditions for 100 km of the way enough 7-12 liters of gasoline, with active "pedaling" consumption increases by about a third - up to 9-16 liters. The main operational requirement is a regular replacement of the set of the HRM together with the pump (from 13,000 rubles, every 60,000 km). Although the 1.8-liter engine has only one camshaft, it uses as many as two gear belts – the second drives the balancing shaft. 2. 0 VTEC is essentially an extended version of the 1. 8 VTEC.
Equipment
Honda Accord 6 shows a good level of equipment. Electrical drive of glass and mirrors is the standard. A great advantage is the low failure rate among onboard equipment. The basic S versions are completely air conditioned. Next in the equipment hierarchy is the LS version, and at the top of luxury is the ES. In the latter, you can count on leather upholstery, climate control and Bose audio system.
Typical problems and malfunctions
You can't expect any trouble from Honda Accord. However, in the process of operation, surprises may emerge that have become a result of the negligence of the previous owner.
However, most likely, sooner or later you will have to spend on the rear hubs and expensive front levers.
Honda engines are very reliable, but require high-quality oil and periodic adjustment of valve clearance. In the advanced cases, a loud knock will be heard. Then you will likely need expensive repairs using original spare parts. It should be borne in mind that engines with VTEC system at high revs consume a lot of oil. This phenomenon will take on a limited scale when using 10W60 oil.
None of the engines are recommended to be equipped with gas equipment. However, in the secondary market, there are quite a few instances converted to work on gas. Such motors, as a rule, have burnt valve seats and problems with stable operation at low revs. In many cases, this is due to the fact that owners forget about the need for periodic maintenance – adjustment of the valve gap, which should be carried out every 20-30 thousand km.
However, some owners, together with HBO, establish an additional system for lubrication (lubrication and cooling) of valve seats. Special liquid enters the intake manifold from an additional tank, which prolongs the life of the head of the block and valves.

4Challenges of selling privately
If you can afford to regularly refuel a car that consumes an average of 10-12 liters in the city, you will be very satisfied. Apart from the typical operating costs, of which the most expensive will be the repair of the multi-link suspension, nothing bad should happen. Problems occur during experiments with HBO and diesel engines. However, the Accord VI is not the cheapest car to keep, and it won’t tolerate savings at every turn. For this purpose, you should look for a car of another brand.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
