2What buyers check
Review
The sixth generation Honda Accord debuted on the market in 1998. The car was produced not only in Japan, but also in England, and the British residence did not affect the quality and reliability of the chord. Quite the opposite. The sixth generation of this model turned out to be very successful and one of the most reliable in the whole range. The Accord VI did not receive significant changes compared to its predecessor, but was improved. The Japanese manufacturer chose to focus on solutions that have been proven by time, and where it was possible to update something, did so. Like engines and interiors. The equipment list includes four airbags, ABS, climate control, cruise control and even navigation, an audio system with control buttons on the steering wheel. Electrical drive of glasses and mirrors has entered the standard equipment. In 2000, Accord experienced a light facelift. The changes have only touched small details, and it is quite difficult to recognize them. The car was produced until 2002. In the line of engines, in addition to the classic Honda gasoline with VTEC system, there were diesel engines developed by Rover. But the most important was the highly-forced 2.2 VTEC engine with a capacity of 212 hp, designed for the sports version of the Type-R - a real highlight in the model range. At the time, the Accord was seen as a car for the elderly and doctors. His “pseudosportsmanlike variation” became something unusual, original and evoked mixed feelings. The huge spoiler and white varnish highlighted the Accord against the background of any other car of this class.
Technical features
Honda Accord - classic sedan (as well as hatchback and coupe) with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. The car with independent suspension at the rear and double transverse levers in the front behaves perfectly on irregularities and in corners. Despite the lack of any electronic assistants, the sedan is safe to drive and very obedient.
Model Type-R received modified shock absorbers and slightly "cut" springs. Greater elasticity was achieved thanks to thicker stabilizers of transverse stability.
Effective deceleration was taken care of by increased brakes with two-piston front calipers. The front-wheel drive copes with a powerful engine thanks to 17-inch tires with a width of 215 mm.
To ease the weight of the car got rid of the reinforcing beam behind the rear bumper, electric drive of the windows of the rear doors and sound insulation in some places. The volume of the fuel tank was also reduced.
In addition, there was also a Euro-R version in the model range. It is slightly stronger, has a richer equipment, small stylistic differences and only the right steering wheel.
Engines
Honda Accord sixth generation received a modest range of engines. These are petrol volumes from 1.6 to 2.3 liters and 3.0 V6 for the coupe. All engines, except the 3-liter, have 4 cylinders and like high speeds. Only in the unit with a capacity of 1.6 liters there was no VTEC valve control system. As mentioned above, turbodiesel had British roots.
Under the hood of the Type-R was prescribed only 4-cylinder H22 A7. The H22 series engines were widely used in other Honda models. The version of the A7 engine received a number of “strengthening” improvements, which allowed to remove quite high performance. Among others, the safety margin of the valve timing was increased. It is enough to look at the parameters: 212 hp at 7200 rpm and 215 Nm at 6700 rpm. Moreover, the torque curve reaches a value of 180 Nm already at 2000 rpm - slightly less than the maximum in a 2-liter engine. In any case, the H22 A7 feels best in the upper rpm range, especially after 5000 rpm, where its entire main potential is concentrated.
Typical malfunctions
Although the “sports” sedan can be considered a unique model in some sense, it has several ailments characteristic of the regular Accord. One of the most tedious is corrosion under seals, on rapids and wheel arches. It is also necessary to pay attention to the brake lines of the rear axle. Over time, there is a backlash in the steering rack and suspension. But this defect is characteristic of many cars with large mileage. However, its presence in the case of Type-R significantly affects the quality of behavior. The sedan was rarely used by owners for leisurely Sunday walks. Therefore, it is imperative to check the ball lower arms, which usually break down without any obvious symptoms of fatigue. The H22 engine has a carefully thought out design and is not tolerant of negligence. It is sensitive to the quality of the oil and the timeliness of its replacement. To enjoy the Type-R for a long time, you need to strictly follow the rules of operation and even reduce the intervals between changes of oil, liquids and filters, especially when driving regularly. The power unit is susceptible to negligence in relation to the cooling system. The result is overheating and cracking of the block. Fortunately, the same engine has been used in other models, such as the Prelude, but replacing it will take a lot of money and time. Lambda probes are considered vulnerable, and flaps do not like pollution. Over time, the sealing of the valves VTEC loses, which begins to pass oil.
Operation and repair costs
The content of a sports car is always expensive, but not everyone understands it. Most of the copies were not properly maintained and operated. Some specific spare parts were available only from the "officials", where prices are very high, and therefore used poor-quality analogues or parts from parsing. A high-performance engine requires professional care, the best oil and valve adjustment. The same goes for the transmission.
The Accord Type-R has larger tires and two mufflers instead of one. The dynamic driving that the sedan pushes towards leads to an increase in average fuel consumption above 10 l / 100 km.
Many elements are compatible with other brand models, while others have substitutes. However, cheap analogues can significantly worsen the behavior of the car, so you will have to spend on better quality, and therefore expensive. Like shock absorbers. Good counters (Bilstein) will cost 120-150 dollars apiece. The clutch kit will require about $400, and the valve timing will require about $180. If you are scared of these prices, as well as a set of front brakes for $ 350, then it is better to abandon the purchase of the Type-R.

4Challenges of selling privately
Finding a well-groomed specimen - borders on a miracle. Even the most expensive deals do not guarantee good condition and regular maintenance in the past. A few years ago, there were more Type-Rs on the market, and today many of them have gone to scrap or have gone to scrap. Owners estimate the cost of their cars in the range of 4000-8000 $. The situation in the market abroad is no better.
Is the Japanese pseudo-sports car worth considering? Yeah. It is suitable for daily travel. But most importantly, due to the fact that the sedan is devoid of electronic assistants, it can be considered a real sports car, however, with front-wheel drive. Finding a well-groomed specimen is very difficult. If the sixth chord is not as remarkable as the standard model, then the Type-R will always be unique, even without its vulgar spoiler.
