Value my car1Why buyers choose this model
The 10th generation Honda Civic is a great car. Spacious interior, large trunk of 478 liters, low seating behind the wheel and a great sports design. It is a pity that the engineers did not keep the Magic Seats seat transformation system. Civic 10 has been to EuroNCAP crash tests twice and both times in 2017. The first time he earned only 4 stars. One star was shot for mediocre protection of child passengers. Honda immediately worked on the errors, and Sivik took the full 5 stars. Prices for used Honda Civic 10 start from about 1,000,000 rubles.
2What buyers check
Engines
For the first time in the conventional versions of Honda Civic appeared turbocharged gasoline engines.
It is worth noting that the Type R 2.0 Turbo debuted in the ninth generation, but the Type R today will not be considered.
The Civic 10 turbo engines are small in volume, but they are economical and fit the spirit of a sports compact car as they are still equipped with VTEC.
In the line of engines there was also diesel, but this is a rarity.
1.0 T iVTEC
The base gasoline unit in the 10th generation of the compact Honda Civic was not so successful. We are talking about a turbocharged three-cylinder engine 1.0 VTEC (126 or 129 hp). He is surprisingly good at Civic, but unfortunately, he is sometimes in trouble. Quite quickly and not necessarily after a large run, there were reports of serious breakdowns. It was usually found that the compression in the second cylinder had fallen. In practice, this meant replacing the engine unit costing 30-40 thousand rubles per used part. It is noteworthy that the 1.0 P10A2 engine is quite complex in design with many components designed to reduce friction and, accordingly, fuel consumption. Unfortunately, in such cases, it is enough to refuse one component, and everything can go awry. That's exactly what happened. It turned out that the gear of the valve timing drive damaged the belt. Belt particles got into the oil and could clog the cylinder cooling system. Usually the second cylinder suffered because it has the highest operating temperature, and in the absence of proper cooling, it is easiest to overheat. Unfortunately, for the owner, the process of degradation of the belt remained invisible. Honda changed the belts and gears, and in extreme cases, the engine unit (and sometimes even after a warranty). Buying a used Honda Civic from 1.0 after replacing the cylinder block seems safer, as in the former case a lot depends on luck. After all, it is not known whether it will be enough just to replace the gear and belt, since the engine could remain particles of the old belt.
1.5 T VTEC
If a litre turbo engine is hard to recommend with a clear conscience, then the 1.5 T VTEC (182 hp) is a much more reliable choice. It has four cylinders and is much more flexible. A small 1.0 R3 at low revs can cause vibration of the body.
Dynamic characteristics with 1.5T correspond to the suspension and steering settings. On paper, but 8.2 seconds to 100 km / h with manual transmission is really impressive. In addition, many Hondas are faster after measurements.
Of the usual 1.5T VTEC problems, only the oil pump is mentioned, but Honda has been updating it as part of a service promotion. The defect affected cars produced before March 5, 2019.
However, they still say that in some units the level of oil increases due to the ingress of gasoline. But it's hard to confirm. In addition, nothing is heard about any serious malfunctions of the one and a half-liter engine. Timely oil replacement should protect against possible problems.
Other problems and malfunctions
Hatchbacks assembled at Honda’s UK plants have no corrosion problems. On the sedans of Turkish assembly, on the contrary, there were isolated cases of minor corrosion. It was found under the seal on the upper and lower welded seams of the doors. In general, these are isolated cases, but before buying it is worth checking the specified places. Painting of the body of the “Turkish” sedan is more susceptible to chipping. Some body parts of the “British” hatchbacks were repainted with official services due to intersperses in paint. Therefore, some cars have a double layer of paint on parts that have not been damaged in the past. In this case, it is worth studying the history of repairs. Some owners complain of crackling in the area of the front and middle pillars, in the armrest or in the area of the glass roof. Acoustic comfort is reduced and creaking brake pads. Fortunately, the defect only occurs in some cars. A typical problem reported by a growing number of Honda Civic 10 owners is the air conditioning whistle. Its intensity increases with increasing engine speed. Official dealers usually dealt with this problem. A lot of complaints are associated with poor quality of upholstery. Significant signs of wear on the sidewalls of the seats can appear after 60,000 km of run. Another typical disadvantage is the wear of the trunk curtain. Honda uses a fabric curtain that opens sideways. Some minor problems can be caused by the vehicle’s electronics. One of the most common is the loss of GPS signal by the factory navigation system.

4Challenges of selling privately
The tenth generation Honda Civic will not disappoint in terms of handling, cabin size and trunk. The best choice would be the 1.5T VTEC version, as the base 1-liter R3 engine is prone to a defect that is expensive to fix.
- Engines: For the first time in the conventional versions of Honda Civic appeared turbocharged gasoline engines.
- Other problems and malfunctions: Hatchbacks assembled at Honda's UK plants have no corrosion problems.
Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
