Value my car1Why buyers choose this model
If you are looking for a spacious family car, there is no better candidate than the Honda Pilot. The crossover has many advantages, but unfortunately it doesn’t look so charming. But the high and volumetric body exceeds all dashing modern crossovers in terms of transportation capabilities. And inside there are quite a lot of cozy places, holders and containers for small items. Honda Pilot can boast of good equipment. The basic versions will have rear air conditioning, cruise control, keyless access and an audio system with seven speakers. Leather upholstery, loud communication, electric rear door and navigation system were offered only in the top versions. It seems that a car-like car on the road will be clumsy. However, that's not true. The Pilot is quite docile on the go and makes it easy to maneuver in parking lots and narrow city streets. Difficulties arise only when moving backwards, mainly due to thick rear pillars. Here comes the help of a rear-view camera. For several years, the pilot was recognized in America as one of the safest all-terrain vehicles. Passenger protection is provided by side airbags for all three rows.
2What buyers check
Engine
For Honda Pilot, there is only one engine - a gasoline 3.5-liter V6 with a capacity of 257 hp (249 hp after restyling in 2011). The engine with the designation J35Z4 is equipped with a VCM cylinder deactivation system, which ensures a reduction in fuel consumption. For this, depending on the driving mode, the 2 or 3 cylinders of the rear block are switched off. The engine has a temporary type of valve timing drive. Recommended replacement interval of 105,000 km. Adjustment of the valve gap is required every 45,000 km. Unfortunately, the engine sometimes presents unpleasant surprises. So, some owners, after 100-150 thousand km, are faced with premature wear of the camshafts of the front head. The cost of the new shaft is about 15 000 rubles, and the total cost of repairs will be about 50-70 thousand rubles. After 150-200 thousand km, even there is wear of rod liners, but, fortunately, much less often. Presumably, the cause of the troubles in oil starvation is a constructive miscalculation. The disease is aggravated by the carelessness of some owners who do not control the level of oil. And its consumption with increasing mileage only grows and sometimes reaches 2-3 liters per 8-10 thousand km. With excessive oil jelly, you have to change the rings (usually not earlier than 200,000 km). In addition, after 100,000 km, oil leaks from the cylinder deactivation unit appear. The oil hits the generator and disables it. Under normal conditions, the generator can serve more than 300,000 km. Another source of possible problems is the catalytic converter. It becomes useless after 150-250 thousand km.
Transmission
The motor works in tandem with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The box isn't giving you any trouble yet. The only reason for complaints is tremors that appear after 200,000 km.
The machine was used in other models of the brand, where it proved itself positively. Problems can occur only if you do not update the oil or do not eliminate leaks in time. They appear in the connection of the cooling tubes of the transmission fluid or when the connection of the tube from the radiator (corrosion of the threaded connection after 200-250 thousand km).
The VTM-4 all-wheel drive system has a lock mode, allowing you to confidently move through deep snow and mud. The only thing that limits off-road capabilities is a small clearance and powertrain shutdown during loads due to overheating.
VTM-4 is a very reliable system. Only occasionally, in severe frosts, owners are faced with the spontaneous shutdown of the all-wheel drive system. After restarting the engine, the VTM is usually restored.
The suspension bearing of the driveshaft can wear after 100-150 thousand km. There's noise, hum and vibration. The design provides for replacement in the collection with a cardan - 60-120 thousand rubles. Fortunately, mechanics of specialized service will be able to replace the bearing - about 8 000 rubles.
It is worth noting that the oil replacement in the rear differential is required every 15,000 km. When choosing a car, be careful when looking at copies from the United States. There were sold options without all-wheel drive - with the front drive axle.
Walking
The rear shock absorbers wear out faster than the front ones. If the latter, as a rule, serve more than 150 000 km, the rear may require replacement after 50-60 thousand km. Original racks are quite expensive, analogues are cheaper: from 8 000 rubles for the front, and from 5 000 rubles for the rear.
After 60-100 thousand km, most likely, the Silent blocks of the front levers will break. Ball supports usually last much longer. The original lever costs an incredible 25 000 rubles, the analogue - about 9 000 rubles. Some do overpressing Silentblocks and balls, which is much cheaper, but less durable.
Relatively quickly surrender and rear stage bearings - after 100,000 km. The external SRUS of the front semi-axles can crunch after 150-200 thousand km. The rear springs are almost guaranteed to sag after 200,000 km, and the wheels become a house.
The steering rack can knock after 60-100 thousand km. Cooling tubes of liquid GUR with age lose tightness due to corrosion.
Other problems and malfunctions
The coating is rather thin and weak.
With age, the front optics become cloudy, chrome climbs from the linings, corrosion is detected on the trunk door, and the button for its opening refuses.
One of the common sores is the leak of the nozzle of the headlight washer. The reservoir with the liquid is located above the sprayers, as a result, the liquid begins to squeeze out by gravity. Replacing the nozzles under warranty solves the problem for a short time. The craftsmen refined the design: they lengthened the tube and curved it so that the upper edge of the bend was above the level of the liquid.
In the cabin there is a lot of hard plastic, which eventually begins to creak.
After 150-200 thousand km can make noise and the heater engine. The cost of a new node is from 5 000 rubles.
Problems on electricians are practically not found, and those that arise, for the most part, are caused by the “curve” of the installed alarm system.

4Challenges of selling privately
Unfortunately, the Honda Pilot was not the most reliable car. Fortunately, all ailments are well studied and relatively easy to eliminate. However, repairs will be expensive due to the very expensive original spare parts and a limited number of substitutes.
- Engine: km, faced with premature wear of the camshafts of the front head.
- Transmission: The motor is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The box isn't giving you any trouble yet.
- Driving: Cooling tubes of liquid GUR with age lose tightness due to corrosion.
- Other problems and malfunctions: With age, the front optics become cloudy, chrome climbs from the linings, corrosion is detected on the trunk door, and the button for its opening fails.
Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
