Why buyers choose this model

The fifth generation Hyundai Elantra (MD) was first introduced in April 2010. In South Korea, Elantra (real name Avante, including Malaysia) was released in November 2010. At the same time, the new Elantra was presented in the United States at the Auto Show in Los Angeles. A year later, Hyundai Elantra entered the market of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Israel (under the name i35) and a number of European countries, including Russia. In 2011, the updated Elantra, selling in circulation of 1 million 10 thousand copies, became the second among the best-selling cars of the year, losing first place to the Toyota Corolla - 1 million 20 thousand copies. Among the merits of Hyundai Elantra MD the title of "Car of the Year 2012" according to the Detroit "Car Show", South African and Philippine international motor shows. Behind remained the popular Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat.

What buyers check

Engines

Korean Avante are equipped exclusively with gasoline engines GDI working volume of 1.6 liters of the Gamma series with a capacity of 140 hp (G4FD). According to the experience of operating similar Mitsubishi engines, many owners are afraid of failure of the TNVD when running more than 100-150 thousand km and subsequent expensive repairs. The main reason is poor-quality fuel, leading to the appearance of deposits on the working surfaces of the pump and wear of its elements. So far, no failures of this motor have been identified.

The rest of the Elantra are equipped with the same gasoline engine of the 1.6 liter Gamma series (not GDI) with a capacity of 132 hp. This power unit is analogous to the Solaris engine. Higher power was achieved by installing phase rotors not only at the intake, but also at the outlet. Another available engine is a gasoline 1.8 liter Nu series with a capacity of 150 hp. All power units do not cause problems.

In a couple to the engines set six-speed manual or automatic transmission. "Automatic" often receives complaints from owners after 20-30 thousand km. The reason is noticeable tremors during switching or braking. In some cases, the flashing of the ECU box helps. Elantras assembled before mid-April 2011 could be “latched” after transferring the gear selector to the “D” or “R” position, due to backlash in the SRUS. To eliminate the defect, the manufacturer provides for the installation of special washers that eliminate the gap.

Walking

The rear suspension of Hyundai Elantra is the same as that of Solaris. In urban driving modes, the overall behavior of the car is adequate and predictable, but on suburban Russian highways at speeds of more than 80-90 km / h, the manners radically change. Although subjectively a bit stiffer than the Solaris, the Elantra is just as good at rocking the waves and rear-axle rear-axle moving off the intended trajectory. But unlike Solaris, on Elantre, the manufacturer did not change the characteristics of the rear shock absorbers. Apparently, from the storm of positive emotions that swept Hyundai engineers after receiving the title of “Car of the Year 2012”, the car decided not to change anything. But if there are good roads, and such suspension settings bring comfort, then on the domestic surface, high-speed movement can even be dangerous - constant monitoring of the trajectory of movement is required. To eliminate the “problems” with rear suspension, many drivers install stiffer springs and other shock absorbers, picking up analogues from other cars. Owners of the Avante note a shorter suspension stroke than on Elantre, which causes frequent suspension breakdowns when passing joints and seams. Front hub bearings are often given up after 20-30 thousand km, especially after falling into the pits. Knocking in the steering wheel can appear after 10-30 thousand km. Causes: backlash at the connection of the long part of the steering shaft with the short and wear of the right sleeve of the steering rack. The cost of the new rail is about 15 thousand rubles, and the replacement work is about 4 thousand rubles. But even after replacing the rake, the knock soon reappears.

Other problems and malfunctions

The quality of the Hyundai Elantra paintwork is satisfactory. Owners note the relatively rapid appearance of chips on the hood. There are also cases of damage to the LCP on the trunk lid and the rear wing at the point of contact with the rear lights. To eliminate the defect, it is necessary to adjust the lid breakers and glue the place of contact of the lamp with the wing to increase the gap.

The plastic in the cabin sometimes starts to creak. Most often, extraneous sounds fill the cabin in the cold season, before it warms up. Over time, the armrest of the driver's door at the point of contact with the elbow of the driver remains a recess. "Leather coating" of the steering wheel is wiped after 20-30 thousand km. When dealing with the problem, dealers change the steering wheel under warranty (about 17 thousand rubles for a new steering wheel), but advise to perform a stretch. And indeed, even after being replaced, the new steering wheel will soon climb again. Some drivers note problems with leather upholstery of the seats: the coating is rubbed and torn.

Problems with heating the cabin Avante in the winter are often associated with cooling fluid: native antifreeze is “prepared” for milder conditions and thickens in the cold. There are even cases of destruction of pipes in the cold due to freezing of cooling liquid. When purchasing Avante from Korea, it is better to immediately take care of replacing working fluids.

There are no problems with electricity. Some Avante owners experience loss of sound when playing music from flash media or discs. This problem is often associated with setting up the music playback on the menu.

Challenges of selling privately

In general, the situation with reliability in Hyundai Elantra fifth generation is not bad. But, as always, there were minor shortcomings. The main disadvantage of Hyundai Elantra is the rear suspension settings.

  • Engines: km and subsequent expensive repairs.
  • Driving: To fix the "issues" with the rear suspension, many drivers install stiffer springs and other shock absorbers, picking up analogues from other cars.
  • Other problems and malfunctions: Owners note a relatively rapid appearance of chips on the hood.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
