Why buyers choose this model

The Jeep Compass was introduced in 2006. The American crossover is built on the GS platform, created in conjunction with Mitsubishi. The first to try on the universal platform Mitsubishi Outlander XL, and then Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot (in the Russian market known as Liberty). The model was assembled in the United States (Belveder, Illinois). The compact Jeep received an ambiguous design with round headlights in the retro style, vaguely reminiscent of the Wrangler. The first update of the model took place in 2008 and affected the interior. More significant modernization followed in late 2010. Representatives of the 2011 model year have acquired a new front end in the spirit of the Grand Cherokee. Changed front bumper, grille, headlights, hood and wings. The back is also slightly updated, but not so radically that it would be noticed at first glance. In the cabin appeared softer skin of the front doors, a new armrest between the seats and a new multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel. EuroNCAP tested the Jeep Compass for safety in 2012. The American earned only two stars. The score was severely understated for poor pedestrian protection. Passengers can be calm. The car will protect you during an accident, although not without consequences. The front panel caused serious injuries to the knees and hips of the driver and passenger. The NHTSA of the U.S. Department of Transportation also beat Compass. The 2014 model year crossover earned 4 stars out of 5 possible stars. The score was reduced for a three-star result in a frontal impact.

What buyers check

Engines

In Russia, only cars with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine (170 hp) were officially sold. It was developed jointly by Hyundai and Mitsubishi. This unit is represented among 90% of offers in the secondary market.

Other engines are rarely found on the market. These are 2-liter - gasoline atmospheric (158 hp) and turbodiesel with pump injectors developed by Volkswagen (140 hp). The latter in 2010 gave way to the turbodiesel Mercedes with a volume of 2.1 liters (OM651 / 136 and 163 hp). Diesel engines were intended for the European market.

The gasoline engines are very reliable. For the drive of the valve timing, a long-lasting chain is used (11 000 rubles per set).

Adjustment of the valve gap is made by selecting pushers (600 rubles per piece). However, this is usually not necessary.

Interruptions in the operation of the engine, as usual, caused by a faulty throttle valve. To 100-150 thousand km wear plastic gears, less often - the electric board fails. The new original throttle will cost 33 000 rubles, the analogue is not much cheaper – 26 000 rubles.

Sometimes the catalyst fails. The original converter costs 51 000 rubles, and the universal analogue is available for 7000 rubles.

In some cases, it was necessary to change the burst exhaust collector (20,000 rubles).

In age units with a mileage of more than 250-300 thousand km, oil consumption increases. Usually the disease is eliminated by replacing oil caps. In extreme cases, the reason for increased oil consumption are stale rings.

Transmissions

Diesel versions were completed exclusively with 6-speed mechanics. Sometimes it had to be repaired after 250-300 thousand km of run.

Gasoline engines were combined with both 5-speed mechanics and CVT2 variator.

The Japanese JF011E variable transmission was installed in many cars of various brands (Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault).

Despite the fears, the variator is quite reliable. However, some owners had to go to the service after 150-200 thousand km of mileage to repair the box (90-110 thousand rubles). At the same time, many variators do not cause problems for 250-300 thousand km.

In the fall of 2013, the variator gave way to the 6-band Hyundai Powertech 6F24 automatic. The box was used in many cars and proved to be very good in terms of endurance. There are no problems with the machine and in the compass.

All-wheel drive system

Jeep Compass is presented in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

All-wheel drive cars could be only cars with a gasoline engine of 2.4 liters and a turbodiesel. They were equipped with a Freedom Drive system that connects the rear wheels in case of slipping the front. This was the responsibility of electromagnetic multi-disc clutch with the possibility of manual locking.

The all-wheel drive system is reliable. However, after 150-200 thousand km, there are leaks of working fluid from transmission nodes. We're gonna need a replacement.

Walking

On the front axle of the Jeep Compass run Macpherson struts, and on the rear - multi-link scheme (4 levers per wheel).

As part of the modernization of 2011, the chassis received new springs, shock absorbers and a larger diameter rear stabilizer.

If the front suspension silent blocks usually reach 100-150 thousand km, the rear can surrender after 50-80 thousand km. The cost of one Silentblock from 500 to 2000 rubles.

Ball supports usually get tired to 100-150 thousand km (800 rubles for an analogue).

At the interval of 100-150 thousand km, shock absorbers have to be updated (3-11 thousand rubles - front and 2-6 thousand rubles - rear).

In the age units, operated in the conditions of "salty" winters, sometimes it is possible to change the rotten front or rear subframe (18-20 thousand rubles for an analogue).

The landing bearings will serve more than 100-150 thousand km. Front are changed separately (2-4 thousand rubles), and rear – in the collection with a hub (3-7 thousand rubles).

Closer to 200,000 km, a steering rack can be knocked or leaked. The cost of the rim set is 3000 rubles, used product - about 12,000 rubles, and restored - 24 000 rubles.

Other problems and malfunctions

Questions about the quality of painting arose in the copies of 12-14 years. There was a flaking of paint on the edge of the hood. In age-old instances, traces of corrosion can be found at the bottom of the doors and trunk lid.

After 100-150 thousand km, the steering train can fail. In this case, there is an error on the airbag, the sound signal and the tape recorder control buttons on the steering wheel do not work. The original plume costs 39 000 rubles. An analogue from China can be found for 8000 rubles.

Sometimes the motor of the air recirculation valve drive is also handed over (6000 rubles). And after 250 000 km of attention may require a radiator heater (11 000 rubles for an analog or 17 000 rubles for the original).

Another weakness is the relay block. It is located in the wheel arch under the left headlight. The block isn't airtight enough. Due to moisture, contacts, relays and wiring rot. As a result, the engine, cooling system, box or all-wheel drive system is disrupted.

Wiring makes itself felt. For example, due to corrosion of the wiring in the left threshold, the all-wheel drive system ceases to function. Or the wiring is rubbed in the area of the CV panel (in the niche of the front left wheel), which leads to malfunctions in the CVT and an erroneous sentence of the box.

Challenges of selling privately

Jeep Compass, although not without shortcomings, but is not among the excessively problematic. The engine and transmission are well studied and have performed well in cars of other brands. Yes, electrics sometimes cause some problems, but the cause of the failure is easily eliminated in the service familiar with the American car.

  • Engines: kilometer worn plastic gears, less often - fails the electric board.
  • Transmissions: Sometimes it had to be repaired after 250-300 thousand km of run.
  • All-wheel drive system: This was the responsibility of an electromagnetic multi-disc clutch with the possibility of manual locking. The all-wheel drive system is reliable. But after 150,000 to 200,000.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
