Why buyers choose this model

The Jeep Wrangler needs no introduction. For almost 30 years, Wrangeler is a leader among light SUVs, which has become truly cult. It is of great interest among lovers of active recreation and is not cheap.

What buyers check

Model history

After the end of World War II, the production of the first car called the Jeep continued by AMC under the name CJ (Civilian Jeep) until 1987. After the model was completely updated and received a new name – Wrangler (translated from colloquial American – cowboy).

In 1997, Wrangeler debuted in the TJ series.

In 1999, a small restyling was carried out, and the 4-liter engine added 9 hp. The fuel tank has also increased.

In 2002, the car experienced a more significant facelift, received a new engine of 2.4 liters and plastic mirrors instead of metal.

In 2006, a new model JK was presented.

Market and substance

Today, the second generation Wrangler TJ series can be purchased for less than 700 000 rubles. However, well-groomed copies of the first years of production are estimated by the owners at 800-950 thousand rubles. What do we get in return?

The Wrangeler Jeep is the exact opposite of the modern SUV. It has a strong design (in particular, a load-bearing frame, rigid bridges and gearbox), but the running does not provide satisfactory control accuracy. Thus, potential buyers should be true off-road lovers, not “drivers.”

Interested in courageous hikes should pay attention to the version of Rubicon (since 2002), which is equipped with pneumatic bridge locks, reinforced suspension and transfer case with a large gear ratio.

The focus on active rest emphasizes the roof, which is only removable - soft or hard (from plastic).

As for the performance, they are not the best. If the front is more or less comfortable, then the back is just tight. The trunk also has a small capacity.

Plastic cabin looks good, and over time, almost no signs of rapid wear. A big drawback is the noise in the cabin from the incoming flow.

Engines

Of the three engines - 2.4 l/143 hp, 2.5 l/117 hp, 4.0 l/177 hp - the best recommendations are worthy of a 6-cylinder 4.0 l. Yes, it is voracious (16-18 l / 100 km), but has high torque, provides good dynamic characteristics, and most importantly - it is considered the most reliable.

4-cylinder engines with a volume of 2.4 and 2.5 liters are also quite hardy, but consume not much less fuel.

Note that the 4.0-liter engines have not been upgraded for years, while the 2.5-liter AMC was replaced by a new Chrysler unit with a slightly smaller capacity of 2.4 liters in 2003.

Diesel units for the Jeep Wrangler are not provided.

After 200-300 thousand km can flow radiator (21-35 thousand rubles for an analogue), or fails the thermostat (500 rubles for an analogue).

Transmissions

There were several transmissions, including 3 and 4-speed automatic. Some versions were equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission from Mercedes.

Clutch of manual transmissions is capable of passing over 200-250 thousand km. The original set will cost more than 100,000 rubles, an analogue can be purchased for 50 000 rubles.

All the machines are very reliable. Repairs usually have to resort to after drowning on the road (about 80 000 rubles).

Transmission

The all-wheel drive system is the simplest. All power is transferred to the rear axle, and the front one is connected manually - only during a stop and only outside normal roads.

The Wrangeler Jeep has two types of rear axles. The most gentle DANA30/35 (the main pair is destroyed), and the stronger DANA44 (with an asymmetrical shape of the differential cover). The reinforced main pair is available for over 30,000 rubles.

Unfortunately, after the "roll" in the puddles in the bridges often found water. Therefore, lubrication of all points of running gear and replacement of transmission oil after "off-road" is mandatory.

After 150-200 thousand km, the crosses of the driveshafts are updated (about 4000 rubles for an analogue).

On the front half axles, crosses are used instead of the SRUS, which also periodically require attention (from 4500 rubles for an analogue).

With age, the glands of the transfer box, semi-axles and the tail of bridges begin to poison (3-4 thousand rubles).

Walking

The suspension used springs from Grand Cherokee instead of archaic springs, which has a positive effect on handling. However, the accuracy of the steering remained far from perfect.

A separate topic for conversation is cars specially prepared for off-road driving. Most often, alterations include only the so-called "lift", i.e. an increase in clearance. However, such tuning without reworking the steering mechanism leads to premature wear of its elements - due to work at uncalculated angles.

Over time, the steering gearbox may require a remon - a leak or backlash appears. The cost of repairs is about 15 000 rubles. The repair kit is available for 8-11 thousand rubles.

Luft in the steering wheel appears due to wear of the bearing of the lower steering shaft. The original bearings are only assembled with a shaft, which is very expensive. In a specialized service, the bearing will be selected and replaced.

Silent blocks of the front axle came into disrepair after 100-150 thousand km of run (1-4 thousand rubles for an analogue). The backs lasted a little longer.

For each front wheel there are two ball supports - the upper and lower, costing more than 1000 rubles each.

Front landing bearings will serve more than 100-150 thousand km. They change in the collection with the hub (6-30 thousand rubles for an analog or 91,000 rubles for the original).

From time to time, attention is required by the calipers of the brake mechanisms (begin to peck).

Other problems and malfunctions

Among the age disadvantages can be noted corrosion of the bottom and exhaust system, especially in those cars that often go off-road. Rust affects the body in the area of the wings, wheel arches and trunk flaps. In addition, sometimes suffer brackets of body mounting and support cups of the rear springs.

The heater motor can be swayed due to the failure of the resistor (from 1200 rubles for an analogue).

Often the ignition lock failed (13,000 rubles for an analog or 76 000 rubles for the original).

The regular generator often had to be updated due to cracking of the body (14-26 thousand rubles for an analog or 74 thousand rubles for the original).

Challenges of selling privately

Why not? Jeep Wrangler TJ is quite strong and not overly expensive to operate a car with good off-road qualities. Yes, gas station bills will be high, but reliable design and good access to alternative replacements will offset the costs. Fans of frequent off-road trips should look for the Rubicon version.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
