What buyers check

Limitations on the applicability of data

The analysis of vulnerabilities and service intervals applies only to Kia Carnival minivans of the third generation (YP body, release years: 2014-2020). We consider cars with a 2.2 CRDi diesel engine (D4HB family) and 3.3 V6 gasoline engines (G6DH and G6DF indexes).

Please note: the breakdown statistics and resource mileage are derived from the experience of repairing related platforms Hyundai-Kia R-series and general service practice for D4HB / G6DF engines. Because of this, the data may be at odds with the Kia factory regulations for Carnival 3.

An important exception: the next generation Kia Carnival (KA4 body, produced since 2021) is designed completely differently. There is a different architecture of onboard electrics, its drives of sliding doors, other gearboxes and software.

1. Common Rail fuel system problems

After 80 - 120 thousand km - injectors usually lose their tightness and begin to excessively drain fuel through the reverse highway (according to the general statistics of machines on the R-series platform). The fires are then stained and the rings are stained.

Usually the problem manifests itself as follows: the engine is hard to start "hot", and at idle speeds begins to work unevenly. Around the wells of nozzles on the cylinder head, there are clear traces of diesel fuel. Due to the drop in pressure in the ramp, the control unit fixes errors, and the car loses its former traction.

Bosch CP4 fuel equipment with piezo nozzles is extremely sensitive to the quality and purity of the diesel fuel. If you refuel with bad fuel, the TNVD quickly wears out and begins to drive small metal shavings directly into the fuel line.

If the TNVD drives shavings, you will have to completely change or wash the entire fuel supply circuit along with the nozzles. This translates into huge repair costs (100-200 thousand rubles).

2. Clogged particulate filter (DPF) and recycling valve (EGR)

The urban cycle of movement over short distances provokes rapid clogging of the exhaust tract of the minivan, since the automatic regeneration of the particulate filter simply does not have time to start. As a result, not only the DPF is clogged, but also the EGR valve, which quickly overgrown with a thick layer of carbon deposits.

Due to the support of exhaust gases, the engine literally “choked” and reluctantly accelerated under load. Electronics try to start the fireworks over and over again, but can not complete it. Along the way, fuel consumption increases, and thick smoke comes from the exhaust pipe. Compulsory cleaning on the stand or buying new DPF/EGR nodes is expensive. At the same time, the very format of using a large family minivan in urban traffic only accelerates the appearance of sodium.

Soot filter (DPF) and EGR valve: with complete removal of ecology - 30-50,000 rubles, when replaced with a new one - up to 150 thousand rubles.

3. Stretching the valve timing chain

After about 150 thousand km, the links of the drive chains on 2.2 TD diesel engines inevitably stretch, and the tensor shoes wear out, although the manufacturer does not clearly prescribe this regulatory period.

When starting a cold engine from under the hood, a characteristic metal knock and rustle can be heard. If the chain is tightly stretched, the gas distribution phases go away, and the sensors record the desynchronization of the shafts. Getting to the drive is difficult, so repair work will be time-consuming (over 30-50,000 rubles).

If you ignore the noise, the chain can jump, which is guaranteed to break the valve mechanism and the piston group.

1. HRM chain drive resource

The interval of 150-200 thousand km is the estimated service life of the chains of both cylinder blocks on gasoline "sixes". This threshold is derived from the general service practice of the Korean platform.

Usually after a long parking, the first seconds of engine operation are accompanied by ringing and knocking of the chain. On the dashboard, a check for phase rotators can light up. The consequences of chain jumping are as severe here as on a diesel engine.

2. High fuel consumption

The high operational appetite of the 3.3 V6 GDI G6DH direct injection engine is not a breakdown, but a basic technical feature. A heavy minivan requires a lot of energy.

The nominal fuel consumption figures are distributed as follows:

To these cost indicators, you need to be prepared in advance with long-term ownership of a minivan.

3. Oil leaks due to seals

From time and constant temperature differences, rubber gaskets of valve covers and sealant at technological junctions lose elasticity and begin to tan.

On the block of cylinders appear fresh grease flows, and from the hood space in the cabin begins to pull the unpleasant smell of burnt oil.

The problem is common and age-related, it is impossible to call it a unique miscalculation of the Carnival 3 model.

Transmission: risks for automatic transmissions of the A8LF1/A8LF2 series

In 2017 and 2018, an 8-speed hydromechanical automatic was installed on the Kia Carnival 3 YP.

According to the regulations, you need to change the liquid in the machine every 60 thousand km. However, if the car often carries trailers, drives loaded or we are talking about a traction diesel engine, it is better to reduce this interval to 40-50,000 km.

After 120 thousand km, the first symptoms of failures in the hydraulic unit or hydraulic transformer are usually recorded. This is usually the case for those owners who neglected to change their oil regularly.

The box begins to kick significantly, tighten gears when switching or move to the next step with hard pushes. This means that the friction damper of the hydraulic transformer works with slippage.

The iron in this box is capable of venting more than 200,000 km, but dirty oil with wear products quickly kills the gentle control electricians (solenoids) much earlier than that.

Total automatic transmission: in case of serious repairs (hydro unit + hydraulic transformer + work) - more than 50-100 thousand rubles.

Onboard power grid: typical failures

Computer diagnostics of Kia electronic systems often reveals several typical fault codes:

Errors P0562/P0563: Voltage in the onboard network went beyond safe limits (too low or excessive voltage). • Error P0620: Wiring break or short circuit in the generator control circuit. • Errors U0100 / U0001: Serious communication failure. The key control units of the car lost contact with each other via the digital CAN bus.

In practice, this is manifested by a garland of glowing indicators on the instrument panel, a sharp drop in battery charge and chaotic failures of electric drives of doors or trunk.

High risk

• Diesel modifications 2.2 CRDi, which traveled more than 120-150 thousand km, if the seller does not have orders for replacement of the chains of the fuel supply and maintenance of fuel equipment. • Machines, which when connecting the scanner found active errors on the pressure of the booster, fuel ramp, incorrect phases or slipping friction disks in the machine.

Moderate risk

• 3.3 V6 petrol minivans with a mileage of up to 150 thousand km, whose owners changed oil in time and monitored the condition of the phase rotators. • Diesel versions with a clean service history, where they regularly put high-quality fuel filters with a high degree of filtration, and there are no stored system failures in the control units.

When inspecting the 2.2 CRDi diesel engine

1. Through the diagnostic scanner, examine archival and ongoing errors on the turbine, high-pressure fuel circuit, particulate filter and EGR.2 valve. Go to the track and check the car for acceleration "to the floor": the traction should be smooth, without dips and gray smoke from the pipe.3. Evaluate the frequency of filter replacement by documents. Open the fuel circuit and make sure there is no emulsion, dirt or water droplets inside.4 Make instrumental measurement of the discharge of nozzles into the reverse line to assess their real performance and tightness.

Inspection of gasoline 3.3 V6

1. Scan electronic units for ignition passes and shift of gas distribution phases.2. Carefully examine the engine from the bottom and top: joints of the cylinder head, valve covers and beds of camshafts should be dry, without traces of oil.3. Listen to the engine start completely cooled. In the first seconds of work there should be no metal cod, clanging or auditory knocking of chains.

Transmission check (for all versions)

1. Evaluate the smoothness of the automatic transmission both on cold and after warming up in traffic jams. There should be no kicks at the start from the place and delays when moving from 2nd to 3rd gear.2. Ask the seller for checks or notes on the change of oil in the gearbox.3. Count the codes from the control unit of the SCI for errors on solenoids and slipping frictions.

Electrical inspection

1. Do a complete survey of all electronic car units. Special attention is paid to the codes P0562/P0563, P0620, U0100/U0001.2. Check the voltage from the generator under load (turn on the air conditioner, heating and high beam) and inspect the power wires of the mass.
