Many fans of the brand believe that the true Mercedes disappeared with the end of production of the W124, which could survive even the explosion of the atomic bomb. The first “glassglasses”, which appeared in the second half of the 90s, became famous for minor malfunctions and modern CDI diesel engines. They were well-driving, but they were no longer able to travel a million kilometers. The next generation got even worse: the gentle transmission, capricious electronics and the problematic electro-hydraulic brake system of the SBC. And now it's time for a change. In 2009, Mercedes introduced the new E-Class, which itself symbolized durability and a return to its origins. Round lines were replaced by angular shapes, and the interior seemed to stop in time, although it looked elegant. But not everyone likes the classic sedan, so Mercedes provided a 2-door coupe (equal to a convertible and a station wagon). The car debuted with 2 pairs of angular headlights, and in 2011 underwent a minor upgrade. A year later, stylists took up the car. This time, the changes were significant, both inside and outside. The most controversial was the new front end. For the first time in twenty years, the E-Class has stopped wearing glasses. But has the German become more durable?
2What buyers check
Common faults
It’s amazing, but despite the huge number of complex systems, components and assemblies, Mercedes is still more stable. But to the legendary durability of the Mercedes W124, he's awry. However, against the background of competitors, the E-Class is quite good. However, this does not mean that the luxury coupe is flawless.
The chain of the engine is no longer immortal and barely can withstand more than 200,000 km, especially in diesel engines. At the very beginning of production, Mercedes blundered with fuel nozzles of turbodiesel. The scale of the failure was so large that the implementation of diesel versions was temporarily suspended, and already sold cars were under a revocable campaign. In addition, traditionally sums up the particulate filter, there are minor leaks of liquids, and capricious attachments.
There are malfunctions of the air suspension and automatic transmission. No one should be surprised by the failure of electronic equipment. With so much electronics and wiring, it’s inevitable.
Replacing something on your own or in the garage of Uncle Vasi is very problematic. Many nodes require “binding” to the car computer using specialized equipment.
On the road.
The Mercedes E-Class Coupe is one of the cars that is hard to find fault with. The interior may not be too expressive, but it is made of materials of the highest quality. Even after years, there is no foreign sound in the cabin on irregularities.
On the door panels is an intuitive control panel for the position of the chair. Central place among the dashboard signs is occupied by a round speedometer, and on the left, as in the good old days, a classic clock is located.
The infotainment system is not too difficult to master. It is controlled by a rotary knob and several buttons. All information is displayed on a large monitor on top of the central panel.
The front seats are very comfortable and spacious. Traveling on the back of the couch is less comfortable. As a consolation, passengers of the second row were offered individual blowing deflectors and additional compartments.
Engines
What to choose? The engines offered in the E-Class can be written a whole book. There were a lot of them. Contrary to expectations, the Coupe variant was equipped not only with the most top-end units, but also more down to earth. The power of gasoline engines varies between 184-408 hp, not counting the flagship version of AMG. In turn, diesel engines developed from 170 to 265 hp.
Even the basic units allow you to accelerate to 100 km / h in less than 9 seconds. But the nature of the car is best suited to V-shaped engines, for example, a 3.5-liter V6 with a recoil of 249 hp (E 300). It is in vain to expect from him growls, and from the coupe dashing habits. The suspension, steering and transmission do not have highly dynamic genes. In the cabin, only a gentle hum is heard, and the car, instead of driving sideways, focuses on calm and comfort. Comparable emotions are generated by the 231-horsepower diesel E350 CDI.
More powerful engines can be recommended to true connoisseurs. However, the car keeps reminding us that it is not a racing car, but a sports coupe that tries to stay comfortable.
3Pre-purchase checklist
Common faults
- There are malfunctions of the air suspension and automatic transmission.
- Replacing something on your own or in the garage of Uncle Vasi is very problematic.
4Challenges of selling privately
Mercedes has proven that it can build more reliable cars than ever before. However, to the ideal he is still very far away. Given the current trends, we can’t expect a better one. However, a graceful coupe with no medium racks, harmonious proportions and a slowly aging design is a really good and beautiful car.
- Faults: There are malfunctions of the air suspension and automatic transmission.
- On the road: The Mercedes E-Class Coupe is one of the cars that is hard to find fault with.
- Engines: Which one to choose?
Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
