Why buyers choose this model

The fourth-generation Mercedes E-Class debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. The car was created by Thomas Stoke. In summer, the elegant coupe – C207 joined the E-class sedan, and in autumn – the spacious S212 wagon (the trunk volume is 695-1950 liters). In winter, the model range was replenished with the A207 convertible. The open version is equipped with a special panel above the windshield, allowing you to move with the roof folded even in winter. External factors cannot affect the temperature inside the convertible. In 2011, the Mercedes 212 underwent cosmetic modernization. Changes were received: clock display, headlights and LED daytime running lights. In the winter of 2012, the German car underwent another facelift. This time the changes were much more serious: a new front and an updated rear, revised buttons and steering wheel. The freshened silhouette was designed by Michael Frey. In addition, the line of engines was adjusted. The younger fourth generation gathered in Germany, Mexico, India, China and Egypt.

The choice is usually determined by the thickness of the wallet. But before you open it, you need to familiarize yourself with potential problems. In Europe, most customers opted for diesel modifications. It should be remembered that the 2.1-liter turbodiesel (OM 651) of the first years of production suffered from problems with Delphi piezo nozzles. Mercedes has been conducting a service campaign in this regard. With mileage, the engine increasingly begins to pester leaks of coolant (pipe under the fuel filter) and wear of the timing system chain. The problem is that the timing system drive circuit is located on the side of the box, significantly complicating the replacement. Sometimes the turbine starts to whistle.

Technical features

The formula for the Mercedes E-Class W212 was: more power and more electronics. Sedan with 220 CDI turned out to be heavier than its predecessor by 130 kg. And this is despite the huge amount of aluminum from which the levers, hood, front wings and trunk lid were made. Low fuel consumption was guaranteed by fantastic aerodynamics. The Cx ratio is 0.25 for the sedan - one of the best in the world among passenger cars.

The W212 has a standard rear-wheel drive. As an option, the all-wheel drive modification 4Matic is available. There were 3 gearboxes to choose from: 6-speed manual, 7- or 9-speed automatic.

The front and rear suspensions are multi-link. All cars, including the basic versions, were serially equipped with a system of adaptive shock absorbers. For an additional fee, the Airmatic pneumatic system could be installed. Regardless of the modification, airbags were equipped with the rear axle of all wagons.

Security? Of course, at the highest level. Mercedes claimed it was the “safest car in the world”. At least in the EuroNCAP crash tests, the E-Class earned a maximum of 5 stars.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The Mercedes W212, unlike the less successful W210, is almost a model of reliability. However, there are many minor issues, and sometimes more serious malfunctions. the 7-speed automatic transmission sometimes creates significant problems, especially when combined with a powerful 3-liter diesel engine. Hydraulic valves and a hydrotransformer fail (after 150-200 thousand km). When oil overheats, the electronic board also fails. 722.9 is in dire need of regular oil renewal - at least once every 60,000 km. That is the only thing that guarantees its longevity. Looking for a specimen with air suspension, do not forget to check the condition of air cushions and compressor. In case of failure to get to the service on their own will not work – you will have to call a tow truck. The rest of the chassis are quite hardy. Owners of the Mercedes W212 complain of malfunctions in the central lock and too fast burnout of xenon headlights. Sometimes they start to be capricious windows, and then completely refuse. The same thing happens with the automatic closing of the trunk lid. And that's not all. Stop responding to the pressing of the keys head unit, sound signal, and "play silent" parking sensors. Fortunately, the problem is most often not in the block, but in the wiring or contacts. The large number of electronics on board excludes any independent manipulation of the equipment. Without a service computer, you can only replace the oil or use a combination of buttons to erase a number of information messages.

  • Faults of auxiliary equipment (nozzles, turbochargers, etc.) appear only after 250-350 thousand.
  • The engine itself does not need repairs up to 400-500,000 km.
  • Before buying, it is necessary to check the condition of the particulate filter and the absence of oil leaks from the cooler located between the cylinders.
  • The remaining units of the Mercedes E 212 may require expensive repairs closer to 100,000 km.
  • Caution should be exercised when buying E300 with a 3-liter engine with a capacity of 231-245 hp.

Challenges of selling privately

If the Mercedes W210 was famous for its capriciousness, the W212 allows you to forget about annoying blunders. The latest generation of E-Class has improved a lot. The progress is notable even compared to the W211 predecessor. Of course, in some instances there are quite serious malfunctions, but the percentage of breakdowns is low. Usually, the transmission does not bother its owner. Electronics will not get bored.

However, with the Mercedes W212, you also get an unrivalled level of comfort, a spacious and luxurious interior, a very rich equipment and a wide range of good engines. This car is almost perfect.

Deficiencies? The controversial exterior design of the pre-restyling models, high maintenance costs, a lot of on-board computer glitches and not as precise steering as in the Audi A6 or BMW 5 Series.

  • Engines: But before you open it, you need to familiarize yourself with potential problems.
  • The formula for the Mercedes E-Class W212 was as follows: more power and more electronics.
  • Typical problems and malfunctions: However, there are many minor things and sometimes more serious malfunctions.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
