The first Paggero rolled off the assembly line in 1982. The second generation went into the series in 1992 and the third in 1999. The fourth generation, an improved version of the third, debuted in 2007 and owes its popularity to the Pajero III’s many successes in Dakar.
2What buyers check
Interior
Inside, the Mitsubishi Pajero 3 isn’t too original or refined. They do not amaze with their quality and finishing materials. Simplified to the limit, the front panel is crowned by a large steering wheel. The impeccable sounding factory audio system kit deserves approval. If we want a big, safe, simple and functional car, then Mitsubishi Pajero is the best choice.
Equipment
Mitsubishi Pajero III is already equipped with almost everything necessary for a comfortable trip. Leather, huge front seats with a fantastic profile and electric drive. In addition, the owner has a third row of seats, allowing you to take on board up to 7 people. However, passengers in the gallery will not feel like they are in premium class. However, the solution in itself is very practical. The spacious trunk is able to absorb up to 600 liters of luggage. If necessary, the Japanese SUV is ready to tow a trailer weighing more than 3 tons.
Petrol engines
The 3.5 GDI engine does not cause any problems in operation. Sometimes there is contamination of the throttle valve. Due to the use of direct fuel injection, the installation of the system for operation on liquefied gas from an economic point of view is not effective, since the fuel consumption is quite high - at least 18 l / 100 km. From this position, the most profitable for the installation of gas equipment is the 3.8-liter V6, which was used on Mitsubishi Pajero from the United States. However, SUVs from overseas are quite rare.
Diesel engines
The weakest 2.5-liter turbo diesel is very rare. Much more often, the diesel Mitsubishi Pajero III is equipped with a 16-valve 4-cylinder unit 3. 2 DID, in which direct injection is implemented by means of a pump. In the gas distribution mechanism of this diesel engine, two camshafts are driven by a chain. However, the guide chains are subject to rapid wear. In some cases, the chain can even jump to several links. Also, due to sensor failure, a fuel pump fully electronically controlled can stand up. Worse, if he started to drive shavings - the turns float, the engine stalls or does not start. The design of the pump is similar to that used in Volkswagen TDI diesels. Therefore, there should be no difficulties with the repair. However, it should be borne in mind that access to the pump is difficult, as a result, it is almost impossible to remove it yourself. Recovery of TNVD costs between $1,000 and $2,000, and used pumps are simply priceless. It is better if this will be done by specialists with experience in this type of repair. Inside the pump is a membrane that quickly becomes damaged when in contact with water or air. Taking immediate action will help avoid major repairs. The cost of the service is about 500 dollars. The first symptoms of a malfunction: the Check Engine alarm or loud and uneven engine operation. Prolong the life of the pump will help fueling of good quality and more frequent replacement of the fuel filter - once every 5000 km.
Transmission
All Mitsubishi Pajero 3 with gasoline engines were equipped with an automatic transmission - 4-speed INVECS and 5-speed INVECS II. In diesel modifications, the machine was installed only to order. Sometimes in machines there is wear of friction disks and failure of electromagnetic valves. Often the reason is too rare oil replacement.
All versions of the Mitsubishi Pajero III are equipped with an advanced all-wheel drive system Super Select II with full electronic control and a central differential that allows you to change the modes of operation of the transmission right while driving. In normal mode, the thrust is distributed along the axes in a ratio of 33:67. If you block the center differential, the thrust on the axes will be distributed equally, i.e. 50:50. The driver also has a gearbox, and in extreme cases, you can even lock the rear axle. The all-wheel drive system is a Mitsubishi Pajero strong suit because it almost never causes problems.
Bodywork
The creators of Mitsubishi Pajero 3 abandoned the frame in favor of a reinforced self-supporting body. This did not affect the off-road capabilities of the car. For active off-road trips, the three-door version of the SUV is as suitable as possible.
Suspension
A characteristic feature of the third generation Pajero is the use of an independent suspension. This scheme has many advantages and disadvantages. The car is comfortable and obedient, like a passenger car. However, in the field, the suspension is less durable.
Refusal
The Mitsubishi Pajero III was not the cheapest car in its class. Despite this, the SUV is not without drawbacks. The vast majority of pre-restyling specimens (before 2003) have problems with corrosion. Moreover, not only body elements suffer, but even wheels, a heater and air conditioning tubes. Another common defect is front hub bearings. If noise from the front wheels is heard during the movement, it means that the faulty assembly must be replaced immediately. With the repair it is better not to pull, and then the ABS sensor may later fail. This will significantly increase the costs. Another disadvantage: corrosion of threaded joints of suspension elements. Often, to replace any component, bolts have to be cut, for which the service asks for additional money.

4Challenges of selling privately
The Mitsubishi Pajero III is a worthy choice due to its relatively small number of problems and good practicality. However, it should be borne in mind that prices on the secondary market, maintenance and repair are not considered low. If you still decide to buy Mitsubishi Pajero, then you should not waste time looking at cheap offers. It is better to focus on finding well-groomed specimens, which will undoubtedly pay off in the future.
