What buyers check

Review

It is impossible to create a car that can solve all the problems. The producers know this well. Therefore, in the model range of many brands there are both light SUVs and pickups, so real SUVs, and then different versions. A similar picture can be seen in the range of Toyota and Mitsubishi. Nissan did the same, appointing the off-road flagship Nissan Patrol. The utilitarian car was produced for decades until a completely new design appeared in 1988. It was GR that became more comfortable (springs instead of springs) and acquired quality interior finishing materials. In 1998, the next incarnation of the luxurious Nissan Patrol debuted. Like its predecessor, the new model was offered in 3- and 5-door body. They differ significantly in the size of the wheelbase and dimensions, but it is worth emphasizing that the 3-door modification is not small. "Short" Patrol is a fairly large car that offers quite decent conditions for travel and a small trunk. It is easy to guess that the long Nissan Patrol is a real giant. An additional advantage is 700 kg of payload. Of course, there are downsides. The large size creates certain difficulties when maneuvering. And it's not just about the turning radius, but also about the mediocre sense of dimensions. Not very comfortable and chassis. If you have to travel only short distances on the week, and go off-road on weekends, then such a renunciation is acceptable. Long trips are complicated by the lack of proper comfort and inaccurate steering.

Engines

If someone is going to use Nissan Patrol for the wrong purpose, then you should think carefully before buying. Look at the engines. Dynamics of the basic diesel 2.8-liter engine leaves much to be desired. A little faster car with a 3-liter turbodiesel. But its 17 seconds to 100 km/h also do not quite meet expectations.

On long-distance routes, average fuel consumption is very important. The Japanese SUV is large and very heavy (almost 2.5 tons), with a large drag coefficient, and therefore not economical. Dynamic driving on the highway ends with a result of 15-17 liters per 100 km. Even if you try to save, it is unlikely to achieve a value of less than 9 l / 100 km, and the average consumption of diesel fuel is close to 12 l / 100 km.

Gasoline modifications are a little faster, however, they are much less common on the market. As for the consumption, even the manufacturer indicates a value of more than 18 liters.

Off the road

The shortcomings of the Nissan Patrol are no longer relevant when you have to move off the pavement. Frame chassis with incisive bridges and rigidly connected front axle, open electromechanical stabilizer, dispensing and locking of the rear differential. If you use all this arsenal, there is little that can stop the Japanese “all-terrain vehicle”.

Off-road tires will be a great addition, especially in combination with small improvements. This is probably one of the best cars for tuning. Without any problems, you can purchase a modified suspension, locks, snorkell, trunk and much more.

Main problems and malfunctions

Off-road does not significantly affect the health of Nissan Patrol. However, sometimes the electronics of the automatic transmission and the control system of the unlockable stabilizer will fail. The latter refuses even because of street mud, however, you can drive without it. But in general, these are not too problematic components. More serious damage is not caused by off-road trips, but aggressive driving at high speeds. It is not beneficial and long load when towing a trailer. Engines are prone to overheating. For a 2.8-liter unit, this can end in cracks in the head, and for a 3-liter one, it can end in melting pistons. Many cars have already gone through the engine replacement procedure. Unfortunately, the new engines are not completely free of the defect. Introduced in 2000, the 3-liter turbodiesel (ZD30) was the complete opposite of its predecessor, the volume of 2.8 liters. Engineers have relied on compactness – 4 cylinders instead of 6. The power unit received a 16-valve head, direct injection with TNVD and Nissan M-Fire technology (Modilated Fire - adjustable air supply through one of the two intake valves, an exhaust gas recirculation system and late fuel injection - after the piston passes the upper dead point). Everything would be fine if there were no faults. The pistons are cooled with oil and the cooling system is running at its limits. In cars of the initial period of production, pistons often burned out. A year later, in 2001, the manufacturer upgraded the engine, but more effective changes were made only in 2004.

Challenges of selling privately

Perhaps, given such a significant disadvantage, you should completely abandon the idea of buying a Nissan Patrol? Don’t worry, because otherwise it’s a very good car. It has no global corrosion problems and the turbocharger is highly survivable. A slight corrosion of lamp contacts in the rear bumper (all tourniquets are replaced) or worn-out sleeves and stabilizer racks - for a multi-year car this is really small.

Nissan Patrol, even after restyling, is not very suitable for moving through the streets of a modern city. Large dimensions and rigid bridges do not give pleasure. A simple transmission has best proven itself on the off-road, not on the pavement. The Japanese SUV is too heavy and slow.

There are some situations where Patrol is indispensable. These are long-distance tourist trips. In general, the car is quite durable, and many copies have good equipment.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
