Value my car1Why buyers choose this model
The Nisan Terrano II was designed for the European market, for those who thought the Nissan Patrol was too big and expensive. The car was in great demand, especially in Spain, where it was produced. Terrano also left the factory with the Ford emblem (Maverick until 2000). The SUV ran on the conveyor until 2006. In an effort to reduce production costs, many Japanese automakers have moved their factories to Europe. Unfortunately, as it turned out later, this was not a thoughtful step. Nissan also went down this path and began production of Terrano in Spain, which greatly affected the quality of these cars. The tall and narrow body of the Nissan Terrano 2 is based on a durable load-bearing frame. From the beginning, 3 and 5-door versions were available. If you want to use an SUV as an everyday car, it’s best to avoid the first ones – they tend to be very poorly equipped. The younger Terrano in limited edition versions of Voyage and Dakar even received leather upholstery chairs, automatic climate control, cast discs and kangaroot. Cars produced after 1999 have acquired better finishing materials. It was not possible to correct the situation with an insufficiently effective ventilation system.
2What buyers check
Engines
Among the engines, diesel engines with a working volume of 2.7 and 3.0 liters were the most widespread. The first versions of the 2.7-liter diesel engine had a capacity of 99 hp. The valve timing drive is implemented through gears. In 1996, the engine received an electronically controlled TNVD and intercooler, and the power increased to 125 hp. Nissan Terrano with 2.7 TD consumes an average of 12 l/100 km. Turbodiesel has a simple and reliable design. However, younger specimens often have problems with the turbocharger, which must be cooled for a few minutes at idle after a busy trip.
In versions 2.7 TDI, the possibility of failure of the turbocharger must be considered.
The more powerful four-cylinder 3-liter 16-valve diesel with direct injection went to Terrano from the older Patrol. Patrol owners unanimously consider the 3.0 Di not a very reliable engine. But in the case of Terrano, it's less loaded and much improved technically. However, there are problems with the injection system. Another disadvantage is the risk of overheating. In addition to replacing the head, the unit will also need repairs. There are also claims to the durability of the turbocharger.
Gasoline engines with a working volume of 2.4 liters are less common, mainly in short-wheelbase versions of the SUV. The engine is equipped with a chain drive of the HRM and well tolerates the installation of equipment for operation on gas. However, the gasoline unit is too weak.
When inspecting any of the modifications, you must check whether there are oil leaks in the area of the valve timing and the oil pallet.
Transmission
Much more problems deliver transmission, in particular not very hardy transmission and clutch. First, backlash appears in the bearings of the shafts, which ultimately leads to rapid wear of the gears of the box. Repairing the box will require relatively high costs.
Nissan Terrano 2 does not have a center differential, so the front-wheel drive can only be included outside of hard coatings. If you do not adhere to this rule, the transmission wears out very quickly and fails.
Do not use the all-wheel drive system on the pavement - you will destroy it.
Walking
Not without disadvantages and primitive suspension. The rear hard bridge is not a problem. The front torsion is not very strong and eventually settles, which causes the SUV to lose geometry. Quite often it is necessary to change the racks and bushings of the stabilizer, the good is there are cheap substitutes. Suspension components wear out especially quickly when operating the car in off-road conditions. In the list of vulnerable elements: steering tips, Silent blocks, ball.
The situation with the rear brakes is worse, since there are no analogues, and the original components rarely withstand more than 100-120 thousand km. The front brakes are no better: too small brake discs overheat quickly, especially in cars from 1993 to 1996. After the brake was finalized, and ABS was included in the list of standard equipment.
Other problems and malfunctions
The body has weak protection against corrosion. Fortunately, only the body rots, not the frame. Younger specimens are less susceptible to corrosion. Regardless of the year of release, the malfunction of the side windows and mirrors control system due to inaccurate Spanish assembly is annoying. Small electrical failures are not uncommon.
The driver's seat is high, but it is too soft and small.
Reliability
The Nissan Terrano was not included in the TUV reports. His assessment was handled only by DEKRA. She classified the SUV as a car with a high number of malfunctions. For Terrano, service events were organized twice. In the summer of 1995, Michelin tires were first used. The second time in the spring of 2002 was a high probability of fluid leakage from the brake system. The action affected 850 copies with serial numbers from 475199 to 493474.
VIN number
The factory plate with identification data can be found either in the engine compartment, on the amplifier of the right belt, or on the central pillar of the body. In addition, the VIN number is stamped on the frame behind the front wheel (may be poorly visible due to corrosion).
Position 1-3 is the world manufacturer code (VSK – Nissan, Spain).
Position 4 - body code (T-Terrano, station wagon).
Position 5 is the engine code (B – 2.4; V – 2.7 TD).
Position 6 is the drive code (U on both axles).
The position 7-9 is the model code (R20 - Terrano II).
Position 10 – Destination Market (U – Europe)
Nissan X-Trail T30 (2000-2007)
Not much is said about the Mistral. I've been driving it for 3 years. He's 26 years old. There's no crashes or rust. How many cars I have had I don’t know. I am a tall man and I am not going to change. Reliable and simple. on the terrano 2 there is a Ka24e 118 hp engine, rear brake drums and pads are enlarged, there is a hatch on the roof
The article is incorrect. Not a word about the Mistral, produced until 1997 at the same plant near Barcelona only for the Japanese market with automatic transmission with a diesel TD27 and in good equipment. Maverick produced along with Terrano 2 until 1998, the machines were also more richly equipped, relative to the T2, a characteristic external difference - chrome front finish and raised PTF (96-98 gg). The frame number at Terrano 2 is in a very correct place - about the middle of the front right door, on the outside. Nothing flies at him from the wheel arches. Leather salons were in standard configurations T2, on Mavericks are more common. The 2.4-liter petrol KA24E with distributed injection and variable intake geometry is the most reliable unit installed on Terrano 2 since the launch in 1993 and until its termination in 2004 in the markets of the UAE and Russia. It can be found on the Mavericks. The engine is very simple, therefore reliable and quite well walkable. I quote Andrey: The first versions of the 2.7-liter diesel engine had a power of 99 hp. The valve timing drive was implemented through a reliable belt. “Check this information. As far as I know, on the 2.7 diesel engine (td27) gear drive valve timing. Thanks for the tip. Replaced. acquired Nissan Terrano 2 1994.

4Challenges of selling privately
If you live far from paved roads and your hobby is fishing and hunting, then disadvantages like the primitive all-wheel drive system and poor asphalt behavior don’t matter. However, ordinary drivers should look at another category - compact crossovers.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
