What buyers check

Model history

Opel Frontera was created with the participation of several countries. The body and suspension are slightly modified components of the Isuzu Wizard. Some of the engines are from Germany, and the production of the model was organized in 1991 in the British city of Luton. Five years after the launch of the assembly line, the Italian diesel VM with a working volume of 2.5 liters appeared in the list of engines.

In 1998, the second generation of the German SUV marked by the index "B" debuted. The modernization was thorough. The changes are noticeable at first sight. The front was carefully retouched headlights, grille and front bumper. The side mirrors and taillights have also been updated. The body elements received more rounded shapes. In the interior, the front panel and seats were refreshed. The line of power units was revised in favor of more modern designs. The manufacturer also managed to get rid of several shortcomings of the previous version.

In 2001, the Opel Frontera B received a new grille with a huge brand logo. A year later, the capacity of the 2.2-liter diesel engine increased from 115 to 120 hp. After the last update, the car was produced unchanged until 2003.

The front panel is made of solid materials. The off-road nature of the car resembles two transmission levers on the central tunnel.

Engines

The palette of power units looks attractive, but not all engines are worthy of recommendations. Some of them should be kept as far away as possible. For example, from the 2.5-liter Italian VM turbodiesel with indirect injection, which delivers a whole mountain of problems. His troubles: failure of the turbocharger, stretching of the studs of the mounting of the stern box, malfunction of the injection system and oil leakage. Each cylinder has its own head, which increases maintenance and repair costs. Not worth noting and diesel units of 2.2 and 2.3 liters, which are often damaged gasket under the head of the block. The first also suffers from problems with the fuel pump, turbocharger valve and valve pushers. Sometimes there are cracks in the head of the block between the valves. Opel turbodiesel is sometimes capricious due to the malaise of various electronic components. The list of offers is also present and 2.8-liter turbodiesel (4JB1T) Japanese company Isuzu. Although the direct injection engine cannot boast comfortable operation and stunning dynamics, its endurance deserves respect. It calmly withstands runs of 800,000 km. However, it will be necessary to replace the liners after about 300,000 km. It is a pity that the Japanese diesel was used only in 1995-1996. After it was replaced by the extremely problematic 2.5 VM, which in turn in 1999 gave way to Opelevsky 2.2 DTI. It is worth noting that parts for a 2.8-liter turbo diesel are more expensive and more difficult to access than for a 2.3 DTR.

Design features

Opel Frontera was offered with two types of transmissions: 5-speed manual and 4-band automatic. The torque is transferred to the wheels of the rear axle, and the front axle is forced to connect. Before restyling, an additional lever was used on the central tunnel, and after that, a button on the front panel. The transmission includes a very useful off-road gearbox and a differential of increased friction of the rear axle. The car has no center differential, so all-wheel drive can only be used off-road.

The front suspension rests on double transverse levers with torsion, and a hard rear axle on leaf springs. In 1995, small changes in the chassis design allowed to improve the comfort and handling of the car. In particular, springs gave way to springs, and the brakes received four ventilated discs. The SUV was produced in two types of body: 5- and 3-door wagon with the possibility of dismantling the rear of the roof of the latter.

EuroNCAP crash tests featured a second-generation model and earned 3 stars.

Typical malfunctions

The Opel Frontera A/B was not a very reliable car. Therefore, when searching for an SUV, a thorough inspection and thorough inspection are necessary. The symptoms are a good reason to bargain.

First of all, you need to pay attention to the condition of the body, which often rusts. Weaknesses: rapids, wheel arches, rear door, hood and frame (mounting points of suspension and transmission). Even if you find a moderately well-kept specimen, preventive corrosion protection is still necessary, especially in the case of the first generation.

Regularly observed leaks from the cooling system (flowing pipes, radiator, pump) and transmission. Another drawback is the appearance of backlash in the steering rack. Often the pump of the hydraulic booster fails.

All-wheel drive transmission helps to easily get out of the difficult situations, but makes it possible to take into account the relatively rapid wear of the Silent blocks and crosses of driveshafts. Not distinguished by reliability: gearbox, clutch of connection of the front axle and differential. Failures of the components of the all-wheel drive system will require large costs of elimination. Unfortunately, there are quite a few cars with worn transmission on the market.

The problem of many used copies is the hum of the transmission.

Owners of Opel Frontera often complain about the capricious onboard equipment. Ailments plague the immobilizer, ABS, generator, rear windshield wiper, illumination of devices and even a speed indicator. A lot of minor malfunctions can easily put any owner of this SUV off balance.

Challenges of selling privately

Prices for Opel Fronter start at $3,000 per copy of the first generation and are limited to $9,000 per representative of the model of recent years of release. The price tag for a large SUV is very attractive.

The main advantage of this car is the presence of an honest all-wheel drive with a gearbox. Unfortunately, off-road opportunities are limited by relatively small ground clearance and small exit and entry angles. Not impressive and the maximum possible depth of the ford overcome.

Carefully designed and well-profiled seats are installed just above the floor.

Deciding to purchase the Opelevsky SUV, you do not have to worry about spare parts. Many owners claim that this is the cheapest SUV to repair, after UAZ and Niva. The younger the copy, the less the risk of a serious malfunction.

Deficiencies? Low reliability (especially Opel Frontera A), noisy and sluggish diesel engines, high fuel consumption of gasoline engines, a small number of copies in good condition. If you like to move on the highway at high speed, you will have to put up with the strong noise in the cabin. Overall, the level of comfort is satisfactory.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
