2What buyers check
Review
The Clio II is one of the biggest hits in Renault history. In just the first three years of production, the car sold around the world with a circulation of 1,900,000 units. The model has shown outstanding success in the primary market. Does Clio have a chance in the secondary market? Probably, yes. After all, motorists will not remain indifferent to the strong advantages of the little Frenchman. Dorestyling models usually in addition to standard airbags and immobilizer were equipped with power steering, central lock and front electric windows. After the modernization, cars began to offer much more. Already in the basic version, four airbags, power steering, electric package and ABS appeared. In addition, in the secondary market it is easy to find an instance equipped with air conditioning. Thus, the little Renault can be considered well equipped. Quite bright were the body shapes of the Renault Clio 2. Don’t let it fascinate with its beauty as much as the Peugeot 206. But, nevertheless, the Clio against the background of the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta is undeniably more pleasant in appearance, harmonious and quite modern. If the models before 2001 had a soft style, then after restyling appeared sharper and bolder lines. As a result, Renault began to look predatory and further advanced in the B segment. In the cabin of a small hatchback, the finishing materials of low quality and a poor combination of individual elements of the front panel are primarily shocking.
Engines
The 1.2-liter 8-valve petrol engine has earned a reputation for reliability and economical. In the city of Clio with such an engine consumes about 7.9 liters per 100 km. But, unfortunately, the power of 60 hp is too small. Motorists spending a lot of time on country highways, it is better to look at Clio with a 1.4-liter 8-valve engine. 75 hp accelerate the car to a hundred in 12 seconds, and fuel consumption in settlements is just over 8 liters. The most responsive 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 90 hp. The engine has excellent elasticity. Clio with such an engine accelerates to 100 km / h in 10.6 seconds, reaches a maximum speed of 181 km / h and consume an average of about 7 liters. All gasoline engines are simple design, do not cause major problems, and in the case of repairs do not require large costs. Over time, the following defects usually manifest themselves: sensor failures, oil leakage and leaks in the cooling system. Diesel modifications are mainly represented by the 65-horsepower 1. 5 dCi. The French engine is characterized by high thrust and low fuel consumption. If in the city to overcome 100 km of the way turbodiesel will need about 5.4 liters of solar, then outside the city the consumption drops to 3.7 liters. But not all is well. The modern fuel injection system is extremely sensitive to the quality of diesel fuel, and its repair is very expensive. In addition, problems arise with the valve of the EGR exhaust gas recirculation system and electronics.
Walking
The Clio suspension is a classic combination of McPherson on the front axle and a torsion beam on the rear. On the one hand, this chassis scheme works gently, comfortably and absorbs irregularities well. On the other hand, it allows you to confidently pass the turns.
There are no claims to the rear axle in service centers. In the front suspension, lower levers, shock absorbers and stabilizer racks are quickly surrendered. Fortunately, replacing these items doesn’t come close to the pocket. The braking system does a very good job of stopping Clio. But when replacing its components, it is better to use high-quality substitutes. As a rule, they have a greater resource than the original spare parts, which will reduce the maintenance costs of the braking system.
Other problems and malfunctions
One of the biggest concerns of Clio II electricians is the owner. Moisture and short circuit can cause a sudden failure of some onboard equipment. A typical example is the taillights. The resulting circuits in the wiring lead to the fact that when pressing the brake pedal, all the lamps of the lamp start to spontaneously light up. There are also failures in the management of wipers, windows, central lock and power unit air conditioning. Sometimes the accumulation of errors in the ECU of the engine leads to its transition to emergency mode.
The Frenchman, unfortunately, does not convince the quality of the sheet iron. Body panels are thin and prone to dents and corrosion. The first foci, as a rule, appear in the area of the fuel-filling neck. One of the disadvantages of the manual transmission is the low clutch life.
Although we are talking about a B-Class segment representative, the cost of service in an authorized center can bring the owner to his knees. Fortunately, there is no need to visit dealers, as most mechanics are well aware of the French’s weaknesses and there is a wide range of cheap parts available.

4Challenges of selling privately
Renault Clio II is an interesting offer for those who do not accept the boring design of German competitors and unreasonably high prices for Japanese. The small hatchback is colorful, well equipped, cheap and, contrary to stereotypes, allows you to rely on yourself. Of course, Renault has a few characteristic defects. But in general, these are the little things that are more annoying than complicating life.
- As a result, the plastic panels creak on irregularities, the upholstery of the seats is relatively quickly wiped, and after a few years the mechanism of folding the rear seats breaks down.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
