Why buyers choose this model

The first generation Twingo lasted for almost 14 years. The second generation was released in 2007, but it was not able to replicate the success of its predecessor. Instead of the original and avant-garde small car, which masterfully combined a small segment with the then-unknown mini-MPV, the French rolled out the usual three-door hatchback. The cost of used copies is falling. But before you go looking for this car, you need to know all its weaknesses.

What buyers check

Body and salon

The new Twingo has once again received large round eyes. Ordinary large headlights don't radiate as much charm. This fact was taken into account by Renault in the restyling in 2012, which was reflected in the front and rear parts of the car. However, the Twingo II is less expressive than its predecessor. However, the digital speedometer still remained in the center of the front panel. Thanks to an additional 17 centimeters of length, the three-door model has become more spacious. 4 people can be accommodated in 3.60 meters. For a car of this size, the trunk of 230 liters (maximum 959 liters) is quite decent.

Design features

The model was based on the platform of the second generation Renault Clio, which was released in 1998. At first glance, the running gear is similar, but these cars do not have the same suspension components. In older Renault subframe shaped like a rectangle, bearing in addition to the levers and transmission. In Twingo, the subframe consists of several parts. In addition, an auxiliary cross is attached to the rigid base at the front through deformable blocks. It's part of the head-on deformation zone. Obviously, this circuit is used to shorten the front end compared to the Clio 2.

The lower transverse arms are also recognizable in shape, but judging by the different numbers in the original catalog, they are different from those in Clio. It is noteworthy that if for Clio as original parts separately supplied ball supports and Silentblocks, for Twingo nothing like was not offered.

Engines

During production, the Twingo was equipped with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine in various power options. The base version of the D7F engine with eight valves has a power of 58 hp. This unit is suitable only for movement in the city stream. The best option is to find a 75-horsepower version of the engine known as the D4F. It is distinguished by a block head with 16 valves. Both units have a valve timing system of OHC type. The valves have a mechanical adjustment of the gap. It is the gap that has gone away that often causes the increased noise of these engines. However, power may fall, difficulties with starting arise, or idling turns begin to float. The gap of the valves is recommended to be checked together with the replacement of the HRM belt. The biggest weakness of D4F is the control electronics. Reno has taken advantage of the offers of several suppliers. Sagem always works properly, but Magneti Marelli sometimes fails. This is due to the peculiarities of the placement of EBU. It is located at the rear of the engine, where it is subjected to significant thermal stress. Find out whose block is installed using the VIN number. Among the available was a turbo engine 1. 2 TCe recoil 100 hp, and later -102 hp. It is derived from atmospheric 16-valve 1. 2. The use of supercharging required a reduction in the compression ratio from 9.8:1 to 9.5:1. The main difference is turbocharging, the support unit of which is connected to the circuit of the cooling system. It is also associated with a flaw - the loss of coolant due to rupture of the pipe, feeding antifreeze to the bearings of the turbocharger.

Equipment and security

ABS and front airbags were included in the basic equipment, and the stability system was available only for a surcharge. The Twingo is the only one of the smallest cars to have earned four stars out of five possible stars in EuroNCAP crash tests in 2007. The basic equipment of this car is scant. Therefore, such versions are valued cheaply. If you want to fully use the interior space, you should pay attention to the complete set of "Dynamique". In this version, two separate rear seats can not only fold, but also move back and forth.

Some cars lack power steering. Its absence creates problems only when the steering wheel is rotated in place. In motion, things get much better. The man is unlikely to experience any difficulties. But women to buy a copy without an amplifier is not recommended.

In the case of the amplifier, we are talking about an electromechanical system with an electric drive on the steering column. His faults are rare.

Reliability

The Renault Twingo is an example of a fairly reliable car. If you take care of it, the baby will last for many years. It has no corrosion problems, unlike Clio 2 or the previous R5.

Twingo RS

Even the usual Twingo looks pretty dynamic. Even better, the hot version of the RS is the product of Renault’s sports department, located in Dieppe, France. It is noteworthy that the bloated wings required an increase in the width of the track. In particular, from 1414 to 1460 mm in front and from 1400 to 1445 mm in rear. This was achieved through other levers. Improvements have improved maneuverability. However, rigid shock absorbers reduce the level of comfort when driving on uneven roads.

Under the hood installed a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 133 hp. with the designation K4M. It has adjustable phases of intake valves. Its only serious drawback is the periodically failing ignition coils and the phase regulator.

In pair with the engine, only a 5-speed manual transmission was used. Very short transfers are not so convenient on long trips. When driving at a speed of 130 km / h in the 5th gear, the speeds are 4150 rpm. However, the Twingo RS is able to deliver true driving pleasure at relatively familiar speeds.

Challenges of selling privately

The Twingo with its compact dimensions is an ideal city car, having a good amount of free space in relation to the size of the wheelbase. The new generation has become more reliable than its predecessor, but it is not without its weaknesses.

  • Body and salon: No wonder the new Twingo again got big round eyes.
  • Design features: The model is based on the second generation Renault Clio platform, which was released in 1998.
  • Engines: A defect is also associated with it - the loss of coolant due to a rupture of the pipe that supplies antifreeze to the bearings of the turbocharger.
  • Equipment and safety: Its absence only causes problems when the steering wheel is rotated in place.
  • Reliability: It has no corrosion problems, unlike Clio 2 or the previous R5.
  • Twingo RS: Its only serious drawback is the periodically failing ignition coils and phase regulator.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
