Why buyers choose this model

The ŠKODA Fabia entered the market in 1999 and its production continued until 2009. In total, more than 600,000 copies were collected. In addition to the classic five-door hatchback, a five-door station wagon and a four-door sedan were offered. There was also a commercial version of Praktik, created on the basis of a wagon. The company took the project very seriously. The result is a quality and reliable car. Fabia has helped boost the Czech brand’s reputation. We can still evaluate the good quality of the model today. Many Skoda Fabias have hundreds of thousands of kilometers behind them, but the car is still not giving up. However, you have to try to find a decent copy. Look for signs of corrosion when inspecting. The body has a pretty good protection against corrosion. Signs of rust are most likely the consequences of poor-quality repairs after an accident. However, there is one “sick” place – the junction of the front wing and the threshold. The interior, though strict, but relatively good. Even the fabric upholstery of the seats is resistant to wear. Plastic is tough, but it's pretty strong. The build quality is good, crickets in the cabin appear infrequently. With age, noticeable scuffling acquires the handle of the gear lever and the steering wheel in the grip areas. Often the vents are broken. Carefully examine the floor near the rear seats. The fact is that in the old Škoda Fabia often begins to leak the back door. As a result, in some cars even begins to mold the carpet. Check the functioning of the audio system, air conditioning and electric drive of the side windows. The electronics of the ŠKODA Fabia are usually only rejected in exceptional cases. Problems can be caused by rotten cable in the engine compartment. It should be securely fixed, and not lie on a longitudinal beam where water accumulates. During the test drive, you need to check the operation of the gearbox. The switch lever should move easily and smoothly, and the speeds should be turned on effortlessly. If something is wrong, the clutch is probably worn out. Let it be consumable, as well as brakes, but do you need extra investment in the first days of owning a car? It is better to go to another copy.

What buyers check

What engines should be avoided?

Very often there are Skoda Fabia with a three-cylinder petrol engine 1.2 NTR, which requires caution. A significant part of cars with such an engine has a very large mileage, and the engine is literally “spoiled”. In the overloaded unit, the valves burn out, the HRM chain breaks, the oil overheats, and the catalyst fails.

1.9 TDI PD is strong enough, hardy and free of congenital mechanical defects. But to find such a motor in good condition and without chip tuning is very difficult. Therefore, there is a high risk of getting expensive repairs. In addition, the power unit works very noisy and vibrates significantly.

The 2.0 MPI on paper has tempting characteristics, but is actually lazy, unwinding reluctantly and consumes a lot of not only fuel, but also oil.

The 1.4 TDI three-cylinder turbo diesel demonstrates reliability only in the hands of a caring owner. But often the engine has to work with heavy loads, in difficult conditions. The clutch of the box, which functions in pair with this unit, wears out very quickly.

The 1.0 MPI version of the ŠKODA FABIA JOURN is very weak and more suitable for short trips. Junior is also poorly equipped and not in demand. Despite the fact that the engine is technically simple, it is not capable of eternal feats.

Which engines to choose?

A good option is a simple 4-cylinder engine 1.4 MPI OHV. Despite the fact that the engine does not admire either dynamics or fuel consumption, it is very reliable - you can always rely on it. The engine is very easy to repair, any garage mechanic-amateur can cope with it. The ŠKODA Fabia with this engine is a real workhorse that is ready to ride tirelessly. But there are also weaknesses: the thermostat, lambda probe and gasket of the block head.

The 16-valve 1.4-liter unit has several versions. The best is the last power of 80 hp. and torque of 132 Nm. It is a very reliable engine that does not suffer from increased oil consumption like the earlier 101-horsepower modification. Despite the lower power, the 80-horsepower engine copes with the car more decisively. Minus one – this unit was installed only in the wagon and sedan. If you are interested in dynamics, low fuel consumption and high reliability, then consider buying a wagon or sedan with an 80-horsepower engine. An even weaker version of the 75 hp engine is also a good choice. However, he is prone to increased consumption of oil, although his appetites are less than those of his 101-strong counterpart.

Atmospheric diesel 1.9 SDI does not strike dynamics. But “driving” it is almost impossible. In addition, it has a pleasant linear thrust, and if you do not pay attention to the noticeable noise, then you can quite enjoy the fuel consumption - 4.5 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. Be careful with the amateur “forcing” of the engine. Reliability can be guaranteed only by an intact serial unit.

Challenges of selling privately

The condition of the first-generation Skoda Fabia depends largely on age and care. If the car is serviced on time, it can last for many more years. A strong body is practically not corrosive.

  • What engines should be avoided?: In an overloaded unit, the valve burns out, the valve timing chain breaks, the oil overheats, and the catalyst fails. 1.
  • Which engines to choose?: The engine is very easy to repair, any garage mechanic will cope with it.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
