Value my car1Why buyers choose this model
After the launch of the Land Cruiser J9, Toyota received many thanks for its successful mix of contradictions. Thanks to the strong design and highly efficient all-wheel drive system, the car is not afraid of even difficult places. And on the pavement, it behaves no worse than many modern SUVs.
2What buyers check
Model history
1996 – The J9 replaces the J70, which continued to be produced.
2000 – The modern D-4D diesel replaced the outdated classics.
2002 – The J9 gives way to a new model, the Land Cruiser Prado J120.
Toyota Prado was offered in two versions: short – 3-door, and the usual – 5-door. The first received the J90 index, and the second – J95.
Interior and equipment
The interior is from the 90s, but is resistant to wear and pollution. As a rule, it is difficult to determine the native mileage of the car. Therefore, a twisted counter is a common thing.
Owners sometimes complain of creaking, which most often comes from the front panel.
There are a lot of seats in the cabin, both in front and behind, regardless of the version. Another advantage of the model is the functionality, especially the 5-door version. The 745-litre trunk is perfect for a large family. The short-wheelbase modification has at its disposal only 450 liters.
Most of the units on the secondary market are well equipped: there is an “electric package”, air conditioning and two airbags. Top versions boast leather interior, heated seats, hatch, chrome package, ABS, ESP and traction control system.
Engines
The most widespread were three engines. The most popular was the 3-liter turbodiesel with distributed injection of 125 hp (1KZ-TE). The unit has a simple design, electronic injection control and fuel pump. It is quite reliable and provides adequate dynamics and fuel consumption (at the level of 11 liters). However, diesel requires control over thermal loads and serviceability of the cooling system (no leaks). There is no sensor of the minimum supply of coolant, and too low a level leads to overheating and failure of the head of the block. Over time, the balancing shafts wear out.
In 2000, a more modern D4-D (1KD-FE) unit with a Common Rail power system was offered. At the same volume, it provides more power and torque (163 hp/343 Nm). The engine consumes 1 liter less fuel, but has more gentle and more expensive fuel injectors (from 20 000 rubles), demanding the quality of the "solar". Less stable here and the turbine - about 120 000 rubles for the original.
In terms of softness of operation, diesel units are significantly inferior to the gasoline V6 with a volume of 3.4 liters (5VZ-FE). The atmospheric system is very reliable and provides good dynamic performance. Paired with a machine, it consumes up to 17-18 liters per 100 km. A fairly hardy and 2.7-liter "row four" (3RZ-FE). But 150bhp is too little.
Transmission
Thanks to constant drive on both axles outside the roads, the Prado 90 is very confident. The driver can lock the central differential, use a gearbox, and in some instances even lock the rear axle. If you do not use the rear axle lock for a long time, then at the right time it may not turn on.
Basic versions with a 2.7-liter engine were equipped with a simpler all-wheel drive system with a hard connection of the front axle.
The transmission elements are quite hardy. Periodic attention is required by the gums. They're not very durable. Fortunately, changing them is easy and they are not expensive. You can't ignore the leaks you see. Large oil losses can lead to very expensive repairs.
The engines were combined with a 4-speed automatic or with a 5-speed manual transmission. Toyota recommends changing oil frequently in bridges, gearboxes and distributions every 30,000 km.
With age, the driven gear of the main gear of the rear axle wears out. To extend its service life will help regular oil replacement. The bulkheads may also require a gearbox.
With large runs in the connections of drive shafts, backlashes occur. This will prompt light knocks or tremors that occur, for example, when switching - at the time of releasing the clutch. To prolong the life of crosses of cardan will help regular updating of lubrication (singinging).
Walking
The suspension on the springs is quite comfortable and most importantly – very durable, regardless of operating conditions: on asphalt or on bad roads. Most often, you need to change the racks and bushes of the stabilizer. However, with large runs, it is necessary to monitor the state of the ball supports of the front levers. They do not make a loud noise about their wear.
The pendant ball hinges are a feature of the J9. Ball joints can break during hard impacts.
Prado J9 is perfect for the role of a tugboat - it can pull up to 2800 kg. When inspecting a car with a hook, attention should be paid to the state of the rear suspension.
In the initial production period, wheels of two sizes were used - 215 and 265 mm wide. Differences not only in tires, but also in design: different gear ratios in bridges and the size of the wheel arch expanders.
Problems of the steering system concern both the rail and the power pump - leaks occur. If the rail can be repaired, the pump most often has to be changed - about 35 000 rubles.
Cheap or expensive?
Despite the overall high reliability, Land Cruiser is quite expensive in content. It should be remembered that due to the constant all-wheel drive, it requires four identical wheels. In addition, it is necessary to maintain the same pressure in the tires and monitor their uniform wear.
The frame needs attention. It blooms over time. To extend its service life, it is recommended to wash the bottom after off-road trips. And, of course, you should worry about additional protection against corrosion.
Very simple electrical equipment seems to be eternal. Sometimes the ignition lock is capricious.
Toyota Prado J9 is very popular than dealers. Do not be afraid of copies prepared for off-road driving or long-distance expeditions. As a rule, such SUVs are more well-groomed and better maintained, compared to those that move only on asphalt. However, you should not believe the sellers who claim that the car was not used in the field.

4Challenges of selling privately
Land Cruiser J9 is a great offer for those who appreciate active rest. It is courageously coping with off-road and at the same time is well suited for everyday travel. Unlike many competitors, the Prado makes you feel confident even in the city. The main thing is not to save on maintenance - any repair will be incomparably more expensive.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
