Why buyers choose this model

The central location of the engine is usually the prerogative of sports cars, from which you do not have to expect practicality. The most popular cars with such solutions are the Pontiac Fiero, Lotus Elise and, above all, the Toyota MP2, which has passed through three generations. The first is a rare classic, the last is not so bright. The second generation is still popular and has a relatively low cost. However, recently, the price tags on it began to gradually rise, especially in Western Europe. Europeans were available Toyota MR2 only with a naturally aspirated version of the 2-liter engine with a capacity of 138 hp or forced to 156, and after restyling 175 hp. Most buyers chose the top version with a Targa roof and the strongest engine. Turbo versions were imported from the United States and Japan, some of which were used to transplant the steering column from right to left. When choosing turboversions, you need to be careful. First, the Toyota MP2 Turbo is expensive, and cheap copies will most likely immediately require additional investment to bring the car in order. The typical interior of Toyota from the 90s is boring with the usual non-sportsmanlike steering wheel. As a rule, with age, the salon acquires a worn look.

What buyers check

Don't push the gas.

“It is predictable for a very long time, but beyond a certain limit it is unmanageable.” This is how the Toyota MR2 is most often described by those who had the opportunity to ride it in track conditions. Especially the first instances nervously react if the turn too sharply reduce the gas.

There's not much in the front trunk to fit.

In 1993, the car underwent a minor upgrade, during which the suspension characteristics were slightly changed to reduce undesirable consequences.

During sports driving, it is necessary to remember that the cooling system barely copes with maintaining the engine temperature within operating limits. The engine is easy to overheat, especially with turbocharging.

Useful volume of the rear trunk is only 220 liters.

Eating tires

Rapid tire wear is a common occurrence for Toyota MP2. The front wheels are in a small plus, so they wear out from the outside. The back is the opposite.

At least a 2-liter engine is not cause for concern. This is a reliable unit with a temporary type of HRM drive, the design of which excludes the meeting of pistons with valves. The engine needs only synthetic oil.

In European versions, only a 2-liter atmospheric engine was available.

The number one problem is bodywork, or rather corrosion. Often water gets through the back trunk lid and accumulates on the floor, from which it begins to rot. The roof also often passes water through leaky seals, next to which corrosion sometimes appears. Other elements of the body hold relatively well, but the varnish from old age falls off in pieces. This is especially true for red cars.

Typical problems and malfunctions

  • water falling on the floor through the trunk, contributes to the appearance of corrosion;
  • corrosion attacks the doors due to clogged drains;
  • varnish peeled off in pieces, especially on red cars;
  • rapid and uneven wear of tires, especially in the front.

Model history

1984 – debut of the first generation Toyota MP2.

1993 – The engine power increased from 156 to 175 hp.

1996 – small cosmetic facelift, changes in the design of the 2.0 3S-GE engine (a valve of the exhaust gas recirculation system is added).

Challenges of selling privately

It is hard to imagine a more harmonious car than the Toyota MR2. It can be recommended for people who are going to use MP2 for its intended purpose - for sports driving. However, certain skills are required in this area. Bringing the car to a good technical condition is not difficult if it is not started. The well-groomed specimens, due to their age, have already begun to rise in price.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
