What buyers check

Review

The fifth-generation Toyota Starlet debuted in 1996, and in 1998 already experienced facelift. Just a year later (in 1999) the production of the model ended - Yaris replaced. Exemplary reliability led to the fact that many copies were badly damaged. The car just stopped being taken care of. Despite its high reliability, Starlet never became a hit. The inconspicuous car was available in two versions: 3-door and 5-door hatchback. The body received medium protection against corrosion, and body parts are expensive today. The reason is the lack of alternatives. With age, they will require replacement of headlights or cracked exterior door handles - from 3000 rubles per element, which is overhead, taking into account the cost of the car. More good can be said about a rather spacious interior, which is much wider than, for example, in the Nissan Micra. At the same time, trying to take a seat on the back of the sofa is not much fun. Not to mention the tedious installation of a child seat. Not admiring and 214-liter trunk. Exemplary ergonomics, but a decent age give sliders on the control panel of the ventilation system. The quality of finishing materials today is no longer impressive, but resistance to wear is high. The equipment of many Toyota Starlet is frankly poor. There is no power steering and a second airbag (appeared in 1998). In addition, ABS is very rare, and the brakes are not effective - 46.4 meters from 100 km / h. And that’s a big problem because the baby accelerates surprisingly quickly. Today, even heavy crossovers fit within 40 meters.

Engines

Borrowing from Corolla, the 1.3-liter 16-valve 4E-FE petrol engine with two overhead camshafts and multipoint fuel injection provides good elasticity and dynamics, which even today can be considered good. This is reflected in fuel consumption - in the range of 6.5-8 liters per 100 km. The engine has a temporary type of valve timing drive (from 2000 rubles per set). Among the typical problems can be distinguished by the failure of the thermostat (from 300 rubles, the engine does not warm up in winter) and uneven work at idling (due to pollution of the throttle, less often, due to the failure of the sensor of the position of the throttle valve - from 2700 rubles). Surprisingly, the exhaust system in many cars is still completely original. Among the proposals are instances with installed gas equipment. If the owner took care of adjusting the gap of the valves, then such cars will not cause problems. In addition, under the hood of the Toyota Starlet you can find a 1.5-liter diesel engine, which was used by its predecessor. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a PSA product, but a Japanese product. The engine is quite reliable, but is subject to the influence of time. It does not cause serious problems and transmission. However, sometimes it is difficult to turn on the rear gear, which is the norm for Toyota from the 90s. The clutch is the same as in the Corolla and costs from 4500 rubles for a set with a basket and a squeeze bearing. With age, there are oil leaks through the odule of the gearbox. For preventive purposes, it should be changed along with the clutch.

I'm not afraid.

As befits a Japanese car, the Toyota Starlet suspension is a little troublesome. It filters small irregularities well and amazes with its energy intensity. Behind is a simple beam, which, in principle, does not require maintenance. The front suspension with Macpherson struts is slightly gentler, and knocking means wear of the bushings and stabilizer racks, less often - ball supports (from 500 rubles). With giant runs, a series of bearings (from 1200 rubles) and shock racks (from 2900 rubles) comes. The original parts, as a rule, stood about 200 000 thousand km.

High reliability proved to be a disadvantage. Many instances are very worn out because they are extremely unpretentious to service, which was simply neglected. Of course, you can find options without claims to the technical state, but the owners part with them reluctantly.

Challenges of selling privately

Recommending the Toyota Starlet is difficult. The energetic engine is not too economical, and the spacious interior does not compensate for the shortcomings in equipment. As for reliability, do not forget about the decent age of the model. Therefore, the complete absence of problems is unlikely.

  • Overview: The body received medium protection against corrosion, and body parts are expensive today. The reason is the lack of alternatives.

  • Yam isn't afraid: As befits a Japanese car, the Toyota Starlet suspension delivers few problems

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
