Why buyers choose this model

The Fifth Golf was groundbreaking in many ways. It received a new platform, the same one that went to the second Octavia, and a completely new chassis. For the first time, the elastic beam gave way to an independent suspension with four levers on each side. Its concept is strikingly similar to the solution used by the Ford Focus, known as Control Blade. According to insiders, this happened because the group of engineers who developed the suspension for Ford, subsequently moved from Cologne to Wolfsburg. In the motor range of Golf, changes were minor. Diesel engines remained faithful to the pump injectors, and direct gasoline injection appeared earlier in 1.6 FSI. Unfortunately, the range left the 20-valve 1.8 Turbo, and replaced it with a new 2.0 FSI with a capacity of 150 hp. In an effort to make the most of the GTI letters, diesel versions began to appear in some markets in the fourth generation. The highlight was the 1.9 TDI PD, tuned to 150 hp, combined with all-wheel drive.

What buyers check

GTI V

In the fifth generation GTI, which appeared a year after the release of the conventional version, it was decided to use only gasoline engines, only with direct injection, only a volume of 2-liter and only with turbocharging. The 2.0 TFSI is based on the atmospheric version of the four-cylinder 2.0 FSI.

The GTI version stands out from the outside with a different grille with a traditional red framing. Sports seats are covered with cloth in a checkered pattern. It is a beautiful reference to the tradition of the first generation. Those who wanted leather seats could choose black or beige for an additional fee.

The limited edition GTI 30 looks a little more dynamic. It can be recognized by the unique 18-inch Pescara wheels with 225/40 R18 tires. Upholstery in the cabin combined - leather and fabric. The hatchback received a stiffer suspension, in comparison with the usual GTI, which, combined with low-profile tires, turns the car into an oak one. Standard golf GTI, in particular, on 17-inch discs, is much more harmonious.

Walking

Unlike some competitors, such as the Megane RS, Volkswagen used a simple solution on the front axle of the Golf GTI. So early buyers may have been worried about how the new car would drive, but today’s owners are benefiting from it. The sophisticated kinematics of fast Renaults are more conducive to fast driving, but when it comes to suspension repairs, owners usually grit their teeth.

On the front axle of the GTI is installed pseudo McPherson. While the regular Golf has levers welded from sheet metal, the VW GTI V has got stiffer "triangles." This did not affect the ease of repair – the ball supports and both Silentblocks can be replaced separately. Special is the rear support of the lever, which is inserted into the Silentblock, which is part of the aluminum bracket.

Engines

Buyers of the Golf GTI V had a small selection of powertrains. At first glance, they are all the same – the working volume of 1984 cm3, the identical stroke of the piston and the diameter of the cylinder. Even the power is unchanged - 200 hp. But actually, there were two different engines. Until 2008, the older 4-cylinder engine of the EA 113 series was installed. It is marked with AXX, BPY and BWA codes. The gas distribution mechanism is driven by a gear belt in combination with a short chain connecting the intake and exhaust camshafts on the opposite side of the cylinder head. This solution has been used by VAG since the 80s. Softness of work provides a cartridge with a balancing shaft in the lower engine cover. In 2008, the turbo engine was replaced by the new generation of the EA888 series with the code CAWB. Instead of a belt, a chain was used, and the balance shaft migrated to the block and was driven by a thin short chain. In honor of the 30th anniversary of the model, the version 30 GTI was released. Its power increased to 230 hp due to the engine with the index BYD from the EA 113 series. The old 4-cylinder turbo engine of the EA113 series is the safest choice. The belt should be changed after 90 000 km, and the new set of drive timing system will cost 9-10 thousand rubles. After 150-200 thousand km, you should not ignore the auxiliary short chain, which drives the intake camshaft from the graduation. The set with a tensioner is available for 7000 rubles. The bearing assembly of the turbocharger is included in the circuit of the engine cooling system. In addition, the cooling of the unit continues after the engine stops.

Transmission

The motors were combined with 6-speed gearboxes - mechanical or DSG.

The robotic DSG6 has received what is known as a wet clutch. DSH requires regular maintenance. The oil needs to be renewed every 30,000 km. This will require 5.2 liters of liquid, which unconditionally must comply with the VW G 052 182 A2/A6 standard.

Regular oil updates will significantly extend the life of the robot. Over time, due to the inevitable mechanical abrasion in the transmission fluid accumulate small fragments of the clutch elements and gears of the differential.

Before buying a GTI with a DSG, you should check the performance of the box. If you feel twitches or vibrations at the start of the car, you should think twice before buying this copy. At worst, it means the quick end of the control part of the box, the mechatronics. It can be purchased separately, and it will cost 80 000 rubles. At best, only the clutch discs will be worn out. For a new clutch block will ask for at least 34 000 rubles.

From this, we can conclude that buying a GTI with a manual transmission is a safer choice. But know that the clutch set for the manual transmission is also not cheap - about 34 000 rubles. Require a replacement and two-mass flywheel – about 30 000 rubles.

Years later.

The third and fourth generation Golf GTI was tolerable, but nothing more. They lacked sparks. For fans of the car, it seemed awkward. The back sleeve beam could offer nothing more. The change was made for the better by the fifth GTI. Independent rear suspension, a stiffer body and careful tuning promised a return to the roots. The fifth edition of the GTI is much more interesting than the later sixth edition. The GTI V offers amazing driving performance to this day. It takes turns at unhealthy speeds, literally leaning on the outer front wheel, which seems to stick to the road. You will feel more than any other car, the rear axle driving the hatchback into a corner and it seems like it wants to overtake you. This is all the result of a thoughtful kinematics of the rear suspension. The Volkswagen Golf GTI V is the car that drives you faster and faster. The higher the speed, the more obedient the hatchback. It is a bit boring at low speeds – it responds more slowly to commands with the steering wheel. But with increasing speed, it begins to come to life. The reactions to steering commands are brilliant, as if the machine were losing some of its weight. Sometimes it seems that the grip of the wheels with the road is unlimited. At the time of its creation, the fifth Golf seemed quite large. Today it is inferior in size to modern compacts. Despite this, the Golf is quite roomy. The landing behind the wheel of the GTI 5 is not quite on the road, but it is very low. The seats are perfect for your body. The GTI engine delivers exactly the kind of dynamic that is fun, not scary.

  • As the crack increases, the engine power drops.
  • Extraneous sounds can be made by the pusher of the high pressure fuel pump - a sign of wear.
  • The problem primarily affected engines with the BPY index of 2006-2007. VW pointed to a defect in the TPI.

Transmission

  • The oil needs to be renewed every 30,000 km.

Challenges of selling privately

Volkswagen Golf V GTI – at one time impressed the automotive public. It sells well even in the secondary market. When buying, check the legality of origin. Golfs were a frequent target of hijackers. Technically, this is a very good car. Faults are encountered and their list expands over time, but mostly it is small things.

  • GTI V: The fifth generation GTI, which came a year after the release of the conventional version, decided to use only gasoline engines, only direct injection, only 2-liter volume and only with turbocharging. Base 2.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
