Review
Audi made its first attempt to indicate its presence in the executive class in 1994, introducing the V8, which was not widely commercially successful. In preparing the successor, the first-generation A8, Audi was aiming for something revolutionary. The debut was preceded by a study called Audi Space Frame with a concept very similar to the future A8 with the code designation D2. Audi ASF Concept received an aluminum body, fixed on a steel spatial frame. This decision went into serial production.
In 1998, the sedan experienced a microlift, and a year later - a full-fledged restyling with an update of the front bumper and interior.
In 2002, the D2 was replaced by the next generation model, the D3.
Pros and cons of aluminum
Aluminum body has both pros and cons. Replacing moving elements such as a hood or doors will not cause any problems. But it is almost impossible to straighten the damaged part from aluminum - a crack (rupture) is formed. And in the case of serious damage to the supporting frame, recovery is impossible. However, some of the elements of the skin can be replaced. Not only those that are stained, but also those that are welded or glued. However, the replacement of soldered and glued parts of the body is not a cheap procedure. It is noteworthy that the design allows you to change part of the spars damaged in minor accidents. With all the disadvantages, there are also positive aspects - badly damaged cars were forced to disappear from the market, as their repair is not profitable. And yet, ASF technology is really the highest level in the field of corrosion protection. In addition, the weight and, consequently, fuel consumption decreased. The quality of the interior is incredibly high. The interior of the car with a mileage of 500,000 km looks like it ran half as much. Audi A8 D2 was offered in two versions with a wheelbase of 288 and 301 cm. The top version with a 6-liter W12 could only be long. This version did not have fixed configurations. The customer himself “tuned” the car for himself, and, as a rule, did not spare money. ESP, electric seat adjustments and multi-zone climate control are common. In addition, a Webasto standalone heater and navigation (large-sized screen) are often found. The newest thing in the class was front-wheel drive. The predecessor was serially equipped with the company's all-wheel drive system "Quattro".
Engines
The base was a gasoline 2.8-liter V6 - a reliable engine, without any serious claims. Atmospheric valves have two varieties - with 12 and 24 valves. In the secondary market, it does not cause much interest, except for those who want to buy the A8 with a manual transmission. "Mechanics" theoretically offered with a 3.7-liter V8, but in nature such instances to meet very problematic.
The 4.2-liter V8 won’t be blamed for its durability, but it won’t be cheap to operate. The engine has two modifications: 32-valve (300-340 hp) and 40-valve (310-360 hp). The second appeared after restyling - at the end of 1998.
Both V8s have distributed fuel injection, so it is easy to carry the installation of gas equipment. However, engines converted to gas are best avoided. First, the gas engine operating culture is often far from ideal. Secondly, the cost of restoring valve seats after long-term operation on gas will cause horror even for the most persistent.
The timing system drive uses a gear belt that drives only the exhaust shafts. The intake shafts are connected by a chain. After purchase, you should be ready to replace the belt of the timing, as well as the chain and two tensioners. The symptom of a malfunction of the chain tensioner is knocking at the start of a cold engine. For a complete update of the drive timing system will have to spend more than 20 000 rubles. In addition, with age, the regulators of the gas distribution phases wear out.
Diesel engines are a real thriller!
Diesel modifications of the first A8 should be bypassed. So 2.5 TDI V6 is famous for low-grade camshafts of 150-strong modification. And although the version, developing a power of 180 hp, is almost free of this problem, many owners do not rest the fuel pump high pressure – the heated engine does not start. To this is to add the wear of the turbine and oil leaks.
The 3.3 TDI V8 is a masterpiece of technical thought. This is the first VW diesel engine with Common Rail injection. In addition, it has two turbochargers and a timing system drive scheme similar to that used in a 4.2-liter petrol atmospheric. Unfortunately, the design and location are such that if necessary, even minor repairs, you have to remove the engine. Don’t count on cheap substitutes. This unit was produced for only three years (1999-2002) and was used only in the Audi A8 D2.
Transmission
Most petrol versions work with Tiptronc automatic transmission (4 or 5-speed). The machine is pleasant in work, but advanced age inevitably promises malfunctions.
The Quattro all-wheel drive system is quite reliable.
Other problems and malfunctions
In general, the car requires a lot of money for maintenance. If something serious (age is still) breaks down, the cost of repairs can easily be discouraged.
A solid investment may be needed and suspension – multi-link rear and front. Cheap substitutes are usually enough for 30-40 thousand km. The 17- and 18-inch wheels aren’t as intimidating, but remember that Quattro’s drive requires all 4 tires to be the same.
Electronics have rarely been a cause for concern. Usually only the sensor of the automatic light level corrector of headlights failed. With age, small failures become more and more. Repairing a seemingly insignificant detail will cost a lot.
The conditions at the back are royal, but the central tunnel is too big.

4Challenges of selling privately
Those who decided to purchase the first generation A8 should be considered brave. On the one hand, low prices attract, but on the other, the high probability of investment after purchase is frightening.
Today, for the first generation Audi A8 ask from 300 to 800 thousand rubles. Among the ads, cars with a 4.2-liter gasoline engine dominate. You don't have to believe in running. The cheapest copies are usually worn out. The diesel versions are the most affordable. But such cars should beware, as well as gasoline V8 on gas.

Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
