The third generation Renault Scenic entered the world market in 2009. The compact van is built on an elongated platform Megane III. From the very beginning, two versions of the van were offered: the usual length of 4340 mm and the elongated Grand Scenic - 4560 mm. The wheelbase of the Grand was increased by 7 cm - from 2,700 to 2,770 mm, and the number of seats in the cabin - up to seven. In 2013, the appearance was updated. Scenic received another grille with an enlarged logo in the style of the last generations of Renault. In 2016, there was a change of generations. In Russia, the third Scenic went on sale in May 2010, and the last copies were sold to dealers in May 2015. In addition, Russian buyers were deprived of an extended version of the Grand and diesel engines.
2What buyers check
Engine
Until 2013, three petrol units were present in the engine line: a 2-liter M4R (140 hp) from Nissan, a 1.6-liter K4M (110 hp) of Renault’s own design and a 1.4-liter H4J turbo engine (131 hp). In 2013, a turbocharged 1.2 TCe (116 hp) was offered. In Russia, turbo engines were not officially offered. All petrol engines, except 1.6 liters, are equipped with a long-lasting chain-type HRM drive. 16-valve 1.6 from the very beginning met the environmental standard Euro-5. The timing drive here is temporary with a recommended replacement interval of 60,000 km. Its only weakness is the ignition coils (1-2 thousand rubles per piece). The Nissan M4R (2.0) is free of serious ailments. But there's one thing. When replacing candles, recommendations should be followed at the time of tightening - 20 Nm. There were cases when candles were pulled. This led to the appearance of cracks in the thread of the block head. Subsequently, antifreeze got into candle wells or cylinders. 1. 4 TCe (H4Jt) will please with good dynamics. Many people think it is a direct-injection engine, but it is not. 1. 2 TCe (H5Ft), unlike the 1. 4 TCe, received direct fuel injection, which allowed to reduce fuel consumption. Initially, it met the emission standards of Euro 5, since 2016 – Euro 6, at the same time, the capacity increased to 132 hp. The Euro 6 version sometimes started consuming too much butter. However, the cases are still isolated.
Transmission
The naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine and 1.4 TCe are paired with the six-speed TL4 manual gearbox. The 2-litre petrol engine was available only with the FK0, a Jatco JF011E CVT. The 1.5-litre diesel used the TL4 manual; the 106 hp version could alternatively have the EDC dual-clutch transmission, designated DC4. The 1.9 dCi was paired with the ND4 manual, and the 2.0 dCi with the PK4. The 150 hp 2.0 dCi was also offered with the six-speed Jatco AJ0 automatic. The manual gearbox is reliable and durable. Its clutch lasts more than 150–200 thousand km, and a replacement kit costs 6–7 thousand rubles. If the dual-mass flywheel also needs replacing, parts cost rises to 40,000 rubles for a conversion kit with a single-mass flywheel. A complete kit with a dual-mass flywheel costs 95,000 rubles. Labour costs 7–10 thousand rubles. The automated transmission is based on the TL4 but has two clutches. Unlike the German DSG, which uses hydraulic clutch actuation, the French transmission uses electric actuation. EDC problems tend to appear around 150–200 thousand km. In particular, the control unit can fail, costing 40–50 thousand rubles. It has been revised in recent years, but reliability data on the revised version remains limited. The dual clutch generally needs replacement at 200–250 thousand km; a new kit costs 60–80 thousand rubles. Adaptation to compensate for clutch-disc wear is recommended every 50,000 km. In some cases, differential bearings wear out or the electric clutch actuator fails.
Walking
The suspension is characterized by omnivorousness and a high level of comfort. The front is equipped with classic Macpherson racks, and the rear is a semi-dependent beam.
The chauffeur is long. Silent blocks and ball supports of the front levers are surrendered after 100-150 thousand km, and the front shock absorbers - after 150-200 thousand km. The cost of the front lever is about 3 000 rubles.
Soon, the Silentblocks of the rear beam are also suitable. The set of original Silentblocks is estimated at 6000 rubles.
After 100-150 thousand km may require replacement of front bearings (1,000 rubles).
In Scenic installed parking brake electromechanical type. There are no usual cables, and each rear wheel is equipped with its own servo motor. Failures in the parking brake occur due to corrosion of the contacts or damage to the wiring. For a new set of wiring will have to pay 3,000 rubles.
An electric power is used in the steering. Fortunately, there are no systematic problems with it.
Other problems and malfunctions
The corrosion of the body of Renault Scenic 3 is not yet discussed. Interesting moment. The VIN number is struck on the body rack from the front passenger door (between the door hinges). Not all owners and inspectors know about its location, so when registering a car sometimes there are unpleasant incidents. With age, rollers of door limiters wear out (3-4 thousand rubles for a new limiter). Sometimes the plastic holders of glasses in the lifting mechanism of the side windows are destroyed. There are also problems with door locks – they do not open and close the first time. This is most often the case with the driver’s lock. The reason is a sour motor. It is usually resuscitated after cleaning. The new castle will cost 14 000 rubles. However, the motor can be replaced separately, picking up an inexpensive analogue in a famous Chinese online store. The basic Scenic phase 1 (Autentique kit) used a monochrome display. Over time, he stopped turning on. It's all about the circuit board. Replacing the display with a new one costs a lot of money. Experienced electricians have learned to fix the problem by re-sweetening the board. In other versions of the microvan installed TFT-display, which is also no-no and charge or go out. Cooling problems can occur for several reasons. One of them is a faulty pulley of the compressor (wedge, backlash). Sometimes the compressor itself is also handed over (from 25 000 rubles). There are also leaks - through the radiator of the air conditioner (from 5 000 rubles) or the lower aluminum tube in the area of the right spangeron (from 9 000 rubles with work).
3Pre-purchase checklist

- The pressure sensor (from 2 000 rubles) fails less often.
- 5 dCi is famous for premature wear of rod liners, which can lead to fatal consequences.
- The problem is that there are no warning signs.
- Therefore, mechanics recommend preventive replacement of liners after 150,000 km.
- Some mechanics recommend changing the oil pump – another 5,000 rubles.
Transmission
- In particular, the ECU is failing - 40-50 thousand rubles.
- In addition, every 50,000 km, it is recommended to carry out adaptation - compensation for wear of the clutch discs.
- In some cases, the bearings of the differential are worn out, or the electric clutch drive fails.
- On Scenic with a variator sometimes breaks the hose of the cooling system of the oil box, or it bursts, rubs and gives a leak.
- For comprehensive repairs will need from 60 to 100 thousand rubles.
- The oil should be changed every 50-60,000 km.
- Usually the first repair is not difficult and happens with very large runs.

4Challenges of selling privately
The third-generation Renault Scenic offers good corrosion protection, a practical interior, good equipment, a high level of safety, comfortable suspension and generally reliable engines. Possible problems are usually minor. A transmission may require significant costs, and even then, only after 200-250 thousand km.
- Engine: This caused cracks in the carving of the block head.
- Transmission: In particular, the ECU is failing - 40-50 thousand rubles.
- Driving: Failures in the parking brake occur due to corrosion of the contacts or damage to the wiring.
- Other problems and malfunctions: About the corrosion of the body of the Renault Scenic 3, we are not talking yet. Interesting moment.
Shows, bargaining and re-registration take time: buyers look, promise to think and disappear. Fair price after inspection closes the auction on the spot. If money is needed urgently, the purchase takes away waiting and repeat displays.
